(40,985 posts)It's meaner & uglier - much like America after the Reagan administration. I've altered how I use DU. I participate less - make more casual comments & fewer commentaries of worth. It's not worth it. Too few really want to debate & too many attempts are fraught with those who just want to disrupt. My least favorite thing about the internet is that bad manners prevail in anonymous environments.
I also don't have time to get involved like I did a few years ago. In posts like the porn threads yesterday, I read the posts that educate & inform, & I skip the trash. Lots of trash yesterday, but some kernels worth taking away, too. Maybe learn to use DU differently? Scan the thread for names of those who you think contribute, & skip the BS. And of course, breaks from the internet are always good!
The commentary you posted is excellent. I wish I had read it when I was in my 20s. It would have shed a light on why I could never reconcile 'nice guys' as nice. I pretty much went for the dorks or shy guys - they felt that girls didn't like them & they didn't put on airs.
