This isn't a judgment call against you -you do as you feel is right- but may I say as an Oklahoman who after 20 years away in San Francisco- probably the most liberal place in the world- I find upon returning an Oklahoma I do not know and am quite ashamed and a bit frightened of which is why I am taking the exact opposite approach you are and I make sure my Facebook and Twitter posts are all pro-Democrat and contain information debunking many Right Wing beliefs and always always (with respect) commenting or correcting on friends posts when they post ludicrous Republican propaganda.
My experience has not been one of being un-friended or deleted or attacked but I have had many positive comments and what I am most proud of many private messages from people like yourself "in the closet" so to speak who are grateful for my posts.
Like Kennedy said "The rising tide lifts all boats" so I feel letting my voice be heard can not only keep me free of pent up anger and resentments but it can also maybe help another person see something they may not have being surrounded by all the Republican rhetoric and can maybe change a persons viewpoint or encourage them too to stand up and speak out for their beliefs each tiny drop raising everyone's consciousness a bit each time.
I understand it's not for everybody, I was raised dyed in the wool Democrat by (thank God) two very liberal hippies in the middle of Oklahoma and my 80 year old mother is still out giving Mary Fallen hell every chance she can so its in my blood-- but if you can just consider the power you have to change people's minds by letting them know your political association and even empower the youth who also may be too afraid to say anything to see your example and be given the courage to choose as they feel not as they are told.
I'm writing a country song called "I Got The Red State Blues" because I know exactly what you're talking about living here, I'm just to ornery to keep my mouth shut like you. LOL
