(31,935 posts)I've been a Democrat since birth. The first campaign I worked on was Carters, when I was still just a child, but I help my mother to paint campaign signs and distribute fliers. I've worked for every campaign since, and met most of the candidates. But the party has driven itself so far to the right since the Clintons were in office that I no longer recognize it. It stands for little more than maintaining power, collecting huge contributions for the wealthy, and occasionally tossing LBGT people and women a bone. Their constant refrain seems to be "Vote for us OR ELSE...!" or else the repugs win, but even when they don't win we continue to push further to the right. It's like America has forgotten that what some now call "idealism" was what most knew as mainstream Democratic values and positions on the issues back in the late 60s, 70s and early 80s. Even the GOP was further left in the 1950s than most "Democrats" are today. I am not a right wing authoritarian, so I no longer identify with the the corrupt right wing institution that the DLC hijackers have turned my once beloved party into. If Bernie doesn't make it, I'll put all of my effort into building a new party-the Greens or whatever it will be called- to allow left of center voters to have representation again. Our lives are at stake, the planet is in considerable danger, and enough is enough!
