As I understand it, October 9, 2015 is the deadline if you want to change your party affiliation; I believe you can register quite a bit later and still vote in the primary, if it is the first time you are registering (and provided you register as a Democrat), or if you are just changing your address, but not your party affiliation.

Not that big a deal, but I just thought I would mention it in case anyone else in NY is doing voter registration. Again, I'm not sure, but people doing voter registration in NY should probably check this detail.
