and the fact that I do receive love letters at RSD more or less regularly, when working on a story on cyberstalking I asked a member of law enforcement about this.

What I just told you is almost verbatim what he said.

Most threats do not rise to the level of being legally actionable though, due to that pesky first amendment, But if that person, notice I will not use the handle anymore... as is this is far more attention than I believe the group as a whole deserve. actually filed a report. it is living in somebody's back drawer right at the moment. I have read the letter, and I would recommend to file one. Even if it will live in the back of the drawer. It establishes a pattern if one actually exists.

To be actionable a love note pretty much has to be an obvious threat to your safety. Most stalkers know this, and will keep their loving notes just south of that line if they are that serious.
