The question is: is there any of that pioneering spirit left in this people? Or has it all been beaten and starved out?

Massive immigration fed that change process....but immigration has dwindled. Are today's immigrants sufficiently vigorous and hungry to restart the engines of change? They've been caught in the backlash, along with native-born.

If we don't have the hope for change, we have nothing (or Obama...I conflate the two).
