(58,785 posts)extremist-leaning beliefs can't and/or won't learn as others do. They require profound delusion and personal dishonesty to sustain, the more extreme and/or immersed the less anchored to reality. The internet is not their friend. Or ours. Experts say extremism is growing on both left and right.
It's certainly been educating to watch the bizarre blindness to and detachment from the reality of what the right's doing. But even if we could somehow make them focus enough to really understand, it wouldn't stick.
I remember that an expert in extremism, after describing the striking similarities between right and left types in simple lay terms, moved on to a major difference, which was that RW extremists "hate everyone else" and LW "hate themselves." (Very simple. ) Whoever and whatever LW types identify with is despised, for some even loathed, and unfortunately that's us and whatever we do.
Sigh. Since they aren't going away, it's up to us to keep them in perspective and work around them.
