Besides the distractions and possible unfair influences of audience reactions (and possible protesters), the very environment of being in a large hall puts candidates into their big "speak to the crowd" mode, where as you mention, they often come across as more real and more sincere when they speak in their normal voice. What is gained by putting the event into some phony sporting arena?
