I have Tricare Select and deal with all of the issues you say Tricare doesn't have.
Vision & dental aren't covered, but I am eligible to purchase coverage under various government employee plans.
Regarding "mystery bills", that's probably a subjective thing, but I disagree that Tricare eliminates them. I'm pulling out my hair trying to make sense out of all the medical bills and Tricare's Explanation of Benefits (EOBs). On the positive side, I am learning all sorts of ICD codes. As it turns out, providers often don't use the "right" ones.

Currently, Tricare enrollees transition to TRICARE For Life when they become Medicare eligible.
