(3,635 posts)but fairly boring with no real connection to PoC. Beto was charismatic white guy known for fighting for brown people, but (suprise surprise) also failed to gain traction just like the black/brown candidates themselves.
The fact that small white states IA/NH go first sets the narrative and media coverage that just selects for a boring field that plays to the needs of heartland whites, just like our Electoral College system, the Senate etc - revolves around them when in fact the Dem base is diverse and metropolitan, where most people in America live, and Hillary won 3m more votes than the Orange Clown. Note that Hillary is white but is an iconic figure of women's rights that PoC (especially black women) felt a social justice connection with.
Obama won IA but he was a once in a generation talent who had no Iraq War vote do defend, and there was/is always Hillary hatred/sexism play, especially in the heartland. And that was time before Tea Party/Birtherism/Trumpism. Obama would never win now, would likely be at the bottom along with the other candidates of color.
