(22,912 posts)This is not 1972. The differences in eras are both profound and numerous. For starters, in 1972 America was still experiencing a decades long high from economic expansion. Unions were strong, job security and good pensions existed for many, middle class incomes continued to climb. The period of prolonged class warfare in which the wealthy stole virtually every cent of wealth generated by increased worker productivity from over 90% of the American public had not yet begun.
A George Wallace type could not come close to winning in America in 1972. Donald Trump is president today. Anger and disillusionment with the established order among mainstream Americans is much more rampant today than it was in 1972, even granted that there were those like me who identified with the "counter culture" back then.
