(2,657 posts)1. Everyone is fighting with everyone.
2. If we keep fighting with each other, Trump will win!
Here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Debate is necessary in politics.
2. A lot of people are not very good at debating because they don't do it enough.
3. DU is the tiniest of fractions of the entire internet and odds are that nothing that we do here, by itself, will cause any candidate to win or lose. Because of this, everyone can relax a bit.
4. Every group of campaign supporters has brilliant people, average people, and stupid people. I find it is best to figure out who the smartest people are in each camp and to try to chat mostly with them. The people who are willing to back up the say with proof, those are the people that I like to talk to. The people who mostly post a thousand versions of "You are so wrong!" or insult you have no proof at all and don't know what they are talking about. The most interesting people on message boards are not really trying so hard to persuade people to their point of view as they are interested in learning new things.
Joe Biden is my chosen candidate. If you can show me something new about him, and it is true, as is not exaggerated, then I am interested, whether it is good or bad. If you tell me something about Joe Biden that is not true or is largely exaggerated, then I do not care what it is, whether it sounds good or not.
You are not going to win someone over to your camp by posting stuff that is exaggerated. The Internet exists. It is too easy to check if something is exaggerated. Once you start posting stuff that is exaggerated, people will stop listening to you, and your words will have little effect.
5. Pay attention to how carefully someone reads what you wrote. If they never seem to be reading what you are writing, don't insult them, just stop responding to them. Maybe they are tired. Maybe they are angry. Maybe they are using an Ipad and are currently getting dialysis at the hospital. You never know. However, you don't have to keep writing to someone who really is not paying attention to what you are saying. If they are not paying attention to what you are saying, then they really do not care enough about what you are saying, or they really are not capable of paying attention, so why bother interacting with them?
6. Keep telling yourself this:
My best days on DU are when:
1. I can make someone feel good about themselves.
2. I can teach someone something new.
3. I can make a new friend.
4. I learn something new.
7. People are stubborn. You will never convince everyone here of any one thing, let alone several things. Your goal should never be to persuade a million people of anything. Your goal should be to concentrate on people one at a time and really connect with them.
The more that you do that, the more interesting your writing will be, and the more that people will want to read what you write.
8. Few things make you a better writer than practice. Few things make it easier for you to convince people of things, to make people laugh, to learn how to laugh yourself, and to truly understand pretty much anything than writing about it. Without writing, there are no movies, no plays, no musicals, no books, no magazines, no record of human history, or animal history, or any history at all. Without writing, there is no mathematics, no astronomy, no science of any kind and no art of any kind other than say, cave person paintings, as well as no diaries, no journals, and no songs.
9. So come here and write what you think, and be as polite as you can get yourself to be. Yet, do not be afraid. Odds are, nothing that you write here will cause the earth to swivel off its axis into the sun, and nothing you say here will, by itself, will cause Donald Trump to win or lose.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
