(2,384 posts)Every Dem who has a shot, especially with an expressed interest in running for POTUS, has been the victim of a smear campaign sooner or later. Gore had been smeared for years before he ran, too. He was smeared for his environmental stances, as well as the stupid Iinvented the Internet trope. It took longer for Kerry to be swiftboated, but when the Rethugs went for it, it was vicious and unending - and ultimately successful.
All of these candidates made a negative first impression on brainwashed, uninformed voters. Hillarys baggage was par for the course. Its the same as Dump and Rudi are orchestrating for Biden - smeared for years as Obamas VP, and now investigated for a nonexistent scandal.
As for smear campaigns, Obama was gifted with an incredible one - birth certificate, Islamophobia, ugly racial hatred, endless lies about his policies from grabbing guns imminently to death panels. Hillary had no worse than Obama, but Obama won... twice... despite it. The Obama difference was that he stoked up passion in the base with ideas that had the power to both inspire and divide. He was not safe.
Inevitably, any candidate who gets the nom will be treated to this, in one form or another. Strategically, its great that we had a packed field this year - too many targets to thoroughly smear everyone at once.
But lets not rewrite history. Hillarys platform was safe. Hillarys qualifications were rock-solid safe. Hillarys party loyalty and pedigree were safe.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
