I wasn't alive in 1972, but as a poly sci major I studied all of the elections since FDR fairly extensively, and from what I recall, one of the reasons McGovern lost so big was that much of the party establishment went through the motions of supporting him but sat on their hands and let him fall, especially when it looked like he was going to lose. I'm worried about a similar phenomenon if Bernie gets the nomination.
