They are intended to winnow the field and choose the strongest candidate. If people don't think their favorite candidate has a good chance to win the nomination they'll switch to someone else. Sometimes you just have to be pragmatic, and in the immortal words of Mick Jagger, you can't always get what you want.

If I were to vote in a presidential
