The Stonewall Inn is a significant historical place in American history. On any given day, on Christopher Street you will see tourists and activists stopping by the place. It's not the only place in NYC where a subway station is named for a significant landmark in the area.
For example: E 161st Street-Yankee Stadium; Willets Point-Mets; Woodlawn (cemetery) Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall; 137th Street-City College; 242nd Street-Van Courtlandt Park; 14th Street-Union Square.
So this isn't anything new. Christopher Street will still be Christopher Street.
