Beatlelvr's JournalDoes anyone else get emotionally attached to their cars?
My dilema: my beloved 2015 Outback needs a $6000 engine fix, sometime within the year. So, looking for a new car, maybe hybrid. Am now used to sitting higher and hate bucket seats. Test drove CR-V, Rav4, and Forester. Not thrilled with any. A new 2026 Outback? No hybrid available and frankly, ugly new styling imho. Maybe a 2025 used Outback with low mileage? Take the $6000 hit and keep my car? I know a hybrid is what I SHOULD do, but not really what I WANT to do. At least I have some time to decide.
Couldn't access DU in Cape Town
I'm on an Africa trip, South Africa being our first country. When I tried accessing DU, it said "403 Forbidden".
I'm now in Zambia and its seems OK here. So I missed out on a whole week of DU!
Still not sure why that happened. Google says it may be a server issue but I've not had a problem before.
Just binged a great show on Netflix
How to get to Heaven from Belfast.
Kind of a serious subject line but chock full of Irish humor. I had to turn on Captions.
Question about parent-to-child inherited real estate
So heres a question about inheriting real estate in California.
My mom died in 2024, and her living trust said her home would go to us 3 children. I was living in the home, after being her caregiver for 11 years. I processed all paperwork at county assessors office for the parent-to -child property tax exemption (so the house wouldn't be reassessed). The next tax bill did not reflect reassessment so we thought everything was okay.
My brother, the executor, recently received a letter from the assessor saying the house would be reassessed, because they don't have the forms I did.
My brother, sil and I go to their LA office ftom Carlsbad. They tell us about Prop. 19 from either 2020 or 2021, that did away with that exemption! Luckily I was living in the house so they will
likely halve the assessment, but will still be alot. Neither my moms estate attorney nor my brothers tax accountant told us about this. My mother could have put our names on the title.
Question: how is this not malpractice?
I don't know if I want to sue anyone, I'm just pissed.
Any other single no kids, no grandkids aunt or uncle who feels invisible at the holidays with family?
I'm having a hard time with this, especially this year. Went to Thanksgiving at brother's house, SIL, their two grown daughters, 5 grandchildren, plus one's boyfriend. I was in a funk to begin with and probably shouldn't have gone. But once all the 20- somethings all started talking at once about the most inane things, I couldn't stand it anymore. By the way, its always like this. Its exhausting. And yes, I'm 74, losing patience as I age. For years I've just abided it, anxious to escape. And these are all good people, and not a Republican in the bunch either! Brother and SIL held up pretty well, but it sent me over the edge this time. And no one noticed when I got up and slipped out the door. I left the two dishes I made.
When I got home 5 minutes later, I texted my apology to SIL and said I'd be back next day to retrieve my stuff.
I know the problem is ME, and I've tried to deal with this for decades. Basically, when you have no kids or grandkids you are invisible. Yes, I could engage more with the discussion, but the discussion is usually so boring, all about the kids and school and sports, ad nauseum.
Question is, what am I going to do at Christmas? I'm considering starting counseling, going to call Kaiser tomorrow. There must be a way to continue being with my family so as not to alienate them or make myself feel the odd one out all the time.
Have any of you dealt with this issue?
Any words of wisdom? Love you guys.
You know those game apps that keep telling you to upgrade to new version?
Is that legit? Sometimes it will tell me to upgrade to new version the day after I start using it, and then a couple days after that. (Speaking mostly of Solitaire.) Anyone have a favorite one they use? Thanks DU.
Northwest California drive trip
Hello DUers. Hoping for some advice on my upcoming road trip in October.
Planning on doing a redwoods trip, first Sequoia/Kings to Yosemite/Calavares.
Going north up the 5 to Yreka, then west, then coming south along coast, back home to San Diego.
Question: is the 48 (Indian Creek Rd) between Happy Camp and Oregon border a good road for an Outback?
Thank you for any help or suggestions
Going through JFK NYC
Some friends and I are planning a South Africa trip for Sept 2026. Flying out from San Diego. One friend is adament she does NOT want to go through JFK. I know its big and maybe confusing, but the three of us could probably figure it out.
Anyone have alot of throuble with JFK?
I was scared of O'Hare a couple years ago, but there were lots of connecting flight signs and people on the ground to direct me.
Your thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Help with moving pets to new home
Please...am moving on Monday. We had to sell the house after mom's death. I have 2 cats, one 10 one 3. The 10 yr old won't be a problem, but the 3 yr old is so squirrelly I can't crate her.
A friend suggested putting a towel over her, which I haven't tried before. I've asked my niece to help. New place is 90 miles away. I'll still have access to this house, and I may have to leave her and come back.
Any suggestions from seasoned cat owners? Thanks!!
