Britain votes for Brexit after dramatic night leaves nation divided

Source: The Guardian

The British people have voted to leave the European Union in a historic referendum in which they rejected the advice of the main Westminster party leaders and instead took the plunge into the political unknown.

The decision in favour of Brexit, following a bitterly close electoral race, represents the biggest shock to the political establishment in Britain and across Europe for decades, and will threaten the leaderships of both the prime minister, David Cameron, and the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

The value of the pound swung wildly on currency markets as initial confidence among investors expecting a remain vote was dented by some of the early referendum results, triggering falls of close to 9% and hitting its lowest level against some foreign currencies since 1985. Jeremy Cook, chief economist and head of currency strategy at WorldFirst, said: “Sterling has collapsed … It can go a lot further as well.”

By 4am, a series of key results signposted a likely leave victory. After a lower than expected margin of victory for the remain campaign in Newcastle, where it won the backing of 54% of voters, there was a jolt after midnight when leave captured Sunderland with 61.3% of the vote in a city which has traditionally been a Labour stronghold.

So I was just blocked from Hillary's group

I would like to know that why is it that that group can chose to call Bernie supporters "Bernistas", and sput untruths about Bernie and denigrate anyone not supporting HRC, but they can't take criticism. As I pointed out there is much worse to come their way from the GOP and they need to be prepared - alienating fellow DU'ers is not the way to go.

What Happened at the Nevada “Democratic” State Convention?

... All of this happened because there has been a bit of a misunderstanding between the “Democratic” Party and ourselves — they’ve been laboring under the impression that we — you know, the people — are supposed to subserviently accept what the democratic party officials have decreed but — meanwhile — we (having been misled by the word “democratic” being in their name) thought that we would get to have a say in choosing our nominee for president. As you can guess, this embarrassing miscommunication has led to a lot of confusion — but worry not! I believe that we can clear all of that up in this article by taking a look at a few numbers. First up, let’s talk about…

1,693 and 1,662

Those were the numbers of both Clinton and Sanders delegates that were at the state “democratic” convention in Nevada on Saturday — well, actually, those are the numbers of delegates that were allowed to participate in the convention on Saturday — and, as you can see:

1,693 – 1,662 = 31

Clinton had 31 more delegates inside of the convention — which wasn’t very good news for the Sanders supporters yesterday. But wait! There’s another number that you should probably know about and that is…

64

64 is the number of Bernie Sanders delegates that were not allowed to participatethis is because they were de-certified and denied entry into the convention. I’ll only point out the obvious — that 64 delegates would have been immensely useful for the Sanders-supporters, who were 31 short of Clinton’s suddenly higher delegate count.

UPDATE: 5/16, 2:06pm PDT, 64 delegates were originally denied delegate status, 6 of whom were later admitted, for a total of 58 delegates that were de-certified. These delegates were rejected by committees made up of officials that Roberta Lange had chosen. As Chair, Lange was empowered to do this by an illegitimate rule change that Sanders’ delegates had attempted to contest, both with a petition to the Nevada State Democratic Party and by attempting to challenge the decision in court prior to the convention. To better understand the illegitimate rule changes, I suggest you examine this petition to the Nevada State Democratic Party, which describes how Lange accomplished the takeover in detail and was begun before the convention on Saturday.

Now, at this point, many of you may find yourselves wondering, “what do you mean ‘de-certified?’ How does that work?” Well, it’s really quite fascinating — let me tell you!

FIGHTING “FRAUD” OR UNDERMINING VOTING RIGHTS?

A must read.,,,

“Mr. Kobach, the ‘architect of voter ID and other restrictive voter registration laws,’ has been urging the EAC for years to make this change but was unsuccessful until Mr. Newby’s appointment as EAC executive director,” Karl Frisch, executive director of Allied Progress.

A top federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) official is under fire for secretly communicating with a proponent of more restrictive voting laws.

In light of the revelation, the progressive advocacy group Allied Progress has asked for an investigation of the behavior of EAC Executive Director Brian Newby to determine if he violated agency policy by exchanging private emails with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach — his former mentor who helped him get the job at the commission.

The EAC is a relatively obscure government agency established by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 that is tasked with improving voter access and certifying voting systems. But, critics say, recent changes to voting laws authorized by Newby in Kansas, Alabama and Georgia are doing the opposite by requiring applicants to present proof of citizenship on the federal voter registration form.

“These laws are designed to keep very specific people from exercising their rights to vote in our democracy,” Karl Frisch, executive director of Allied Progress, told WhoWhatWhy.

When Newby gave the three states his OK, then-EAC vice-chairman Thomas Hicks strongly criticized the action and said it “contradicts policy and precedent previously established by this Commission.” Hicks is currently the chairman of the EAC.

AZ - County Recorder discounted Latino voters

Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell, in charge of overseeing the election, told reporters she was sorry people were upset but didn’t offer solutions.

On Monday, she told La Voz Arizona reporter Laura Gómez that she took into account several factors to have fewer polling places, including allowing people to vote anywhere instead of a designated one.

“We were looking for locations that were larger so we could have more people in them,” Purcell said. “We decided that you could go anyplace which we’ve never done before.

"So we looked at an area, and factored into that how many early ballots we usually get in that area and how many people normally vote at the polls. We didn’t look at it as legislative districts. We looked at the overall picture of our voters.”

So, it is no coincidence many poor and predominantly Latino areas didn’t get a polling place. Purcell and her staff figured few of them vote anyway.

She just decided to discount them. Really.

Is there a subliminal reason that Hillary's red arrow

on her sign points to the right.

Okay all silliness aside, Hillary's ties to Goldman-Sachs, Walmart et al are not new and she does owe them, which, if elected, she will re-pay. And why is it taking her so long to produce transcripts of her speeches to Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street firms.

Hillary is not running a clean campaign - she doesn't know how, as witnessed in 2008.

Hillary changes her mind as often as a runway model changes clothes.
