Hamnet

Saw a free screening last night of "Hamnet" based on the best-selling novel by Maggie O'Farrell with a talk back afterwards with O'Farrell.

Excellent movie. Hamnet was Shakespeare's son. The story is about Shakespeare's relationship with his wife and family and his growing career.

The movie is a little sluggish for the first half and then picks up. Quite a moving ending. I'm going to re-read the book to see how much the film differs from it. Afterwards, O'Farrell talked about as the author of the novel she had to let go of her need for everything to match the book exactly because she knew that screenplays have to work differently.

I'm not going to say what happened in the movie, except that the play Hamlet is based on his son Hamnet.

If I had legs I'd kick you...

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. It was our escape from handing out candy on Halloween. Dinner and a movie.

Unfortunately, watching the movie was like being tortured. The plot, the acting, the camera work, etc. It felt like 5 hours instead of under 2. None of it worked. I love Rose Byrne, but this movie was so bad. I kept fantasizing during the movie that I should walk out and go to one of the other movies in the complex. I could have seen Frankenstein or Bugonia.

I'd love to hear from anyone who actually liked it...and why.

Hedda

Saw Hedda last night at a screening at Vidiots in Los Angeles. After the screening, the director and lead actress were interviewed.

Fantastic! It opens on Prime on Wednesday, I think.

It's based on Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. The director/writer was Nia DaCosta who is relatively new and took lots of risks with this one and they all work. Tension starts from the very beginning with the background music and continues right to the end. It all takes place in a wealthy home just purchased by Hedda's husband who needs work and the party that takes place is where Hedda does her crafty magic. She incites drama by trying to sabotage other writers from getting the job he wants.

There are more goings on and themes and complications that pull you to the end. I'll leave it at that.

Last night I watched the film Hedda Gabler made in 1963 starring Ingrid Bergman. In the new movie by DaCosta I can see that she kept the bones from the original but expanded it magnificently.

Highly recommended. DaCosta's script originality inspired me to get back to work on my own scripts.

Hannah Arendt on PBS a Must Watch

The documentary on Hannah Arendt details her analysis of the stages of autocracy.
It is so on point with what is going on now. She escaped from Hitler then arrives
here and sees what's going on in the McCarthy era which is hauntingly similar to
current events. Controlling the media, hiring imbeciles to run the government, etc.

We must gather our wits and come out fighting. NOW

Aldous Huxley....Thoughts?

I just finished Island by Aldous Huxley and was very impressed but overwhelmed. Has anyone
else read it? He digs really deep into the meaning of God and life.

Everyone who wants to is cordially invited to send t rump a post card.....
On March 15th, please send Donald Trump a postcard that publicly expresses our opposition to him. The more the merrier. From all over the world. Hopefully overwhelming his postal service and knowing his ego, harass his worthless ass.... with his unpopularity and failure. Feel free to also let the media know.... and the politicians standing with him. Let's bury the White House post office in pink slips, all informing Donnie that he’s fired.
Each of us — every protester from every march, each congress calling citizen, every boycotter, volunteer, donor, and petition signer — if each of us writes even a single postcard and we put them all in the mail on the same day, March 15th, well: you do the math. No alternative fact or Russian translation will explain away our record-breaking, officially verifiable, warehouse-filling flood of fury. Hank Aaron currently holds the record for fan mail, having received 900,000 pieces in a year. We’re setting a new record: over a million pieces in a day, with not a single nice thing to say.
So, sharpen your wit, unsheathe your writing implements, and see if your sincerest ill-wishes can pierce Donald’s famously thin skin.
Prepare for March 15th, 2025, a day hereafter to be known as #TheIdesOfTrump Write one postcard. Write a dozen! Take a picture and post it on social media tagged with #TheIdesOfTrump ! Spread the word! Everyone on Earth should let Donnie know how he’s doing. They can’t build a wall high enough to stop the mail.
March 15th, mail your messages to:
President (for now) Donald J. Trump
The White House

Shrinking

I originally started Shrinking series over a year ago and quit mid first episode because as a psychologist I knew that the behavior of the therapists in the series was inappropriate. Real therapists wouldn't talk that way with patients, invite them into their home, etc. So, I bailed.

But, I kept getting pestered by friends who said they loved it.

So, I dived in and fell in love with it by suspending my reality and just went with the story. I watched one or two episodes daily. The acting was great, the story line great, loved the ending.

Loren and Rose 2022 on Amazon Prime

Watched this movie last night. Talk about a hidden gem!

It stars Jacqueline Bisset and Kelly Blatz and is the story of two people, one an accomplished but old actress and the other a relative newbie to the film field who are going to be working together. For the most part it's a conversation between two people at dinner which can be boring but for those interested in a conversation about the movie industry it is excellent. Kinda like My Dinner with Andre.

On a side note, when this movie initially came out in 2022 my husband and I took care of Kelly Blatz's home while he and his wife went to the opening in France. I was a member of Trusted Housesitters and had been for 5 years which you can sign up for and stay in people's home for free and take care of their pets and house. It was fascinating watching Blatz in the movie versus how he was with us personally. In the movie he plays a very sweet, young, gay man who is insecure. In real life, he was a nightmare to us. He complained vociferously about us to the Trusted Housesitters company. The complaints were resolved, but I told the company that we would no longer be a member. His complaints were that I moved a book from his bookshelf to the coffee table and that we did not take care of his indoor plants well. My husband, in my opinion, did take care of the plants. He's a plant junkie. Anyway, we apologized for moving the book and bought him new plants. Our daughter who lived near him delivered the new plants and he and his wife were extremely nasty to her.

Nevertheless, his acting in the movie was excellent. You could see the subtle shifts in emotion on his face and in his dialogue. Let me know what you think.
