MD20
MD20's JournalI'm impressed by the civility shown by the Black community.
In the wake of such blatant injustice(s), the whole world is judging. These episodes, relatively rare considering the vast population of 300 millions, are uncovering pockets of frustrated white folks who just don't like Blacks and are willing to act upon their prejudices in a violent manner. But what impressions are being formed in countries where people of color reign? What global consequences are we risking when policemen are ignoring pleas from minorities for the fundamental rights guaranteed by "equal protection under the law?"
I would hope that the majority of mainstream America does not endorse the actions of bigots bent on creating chaos and civil disruptions by murdering or injuring innocent people. I truly believe that the majority of us will join hands in combating such hatred by rooting out and prosecuting those who may be conspiring to inflame it. The states where CCW laws are promulgated with such alarming dissonance are suspect for harboring bastions of "conservative" killers driven by fear and hatred. Neither Democrats or Republicans are immune. George Zimmerman is a registered Democrat but his social world view concerning Blacks seems to be right down in the gutter with that of Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh!
One quote from your premise still bothers me!
As I said before, your assessment of the less than fully disclosed events is agreeable. I might add that the bulk your analysis was expertly done.
Yet, the nagging pangs of doubt arose when I saw that you started your 4th paragraph with this:
To me, that statement is troubling because it embodies the premise that Zimmerman 's
right to be suspicious of Martin somehow coalesced into the authority or , as you put it,, the right to harass Martin by following him, apparently at a close enough distance to make Martin nervous. But you didn't stop there, did you? Without citing any references you unilaterally embrace all of the moves made by Zimmerman that led to this tragedy in the first place. Indeed, saying Zimmerman had the right to pursue Trayvon and ask him what he was up to is disingenuous.
MY POINT: if Zimmerman was following Martin so close that he could see the lint on his hoodie, that is undue harassment. Following from a safe distance, say a couple of hundred feet , would not be so obvious and iMHO would be more acceptable.
We know "following" placed Zimmerman in close proximity to Martin. You seem to support the notion that it was ok for Zimmerman to escalate his harassing episode by asking the victim questions. If it were Snoop Dog instead of Martin, I imagine the silence in the neighborhood would have been punctuated with multiple shots...all into the body of the stalker, Zimmerman. Snoop, though, would have been arrested and hauled off to jail.
The Stand Your Ground Law wasn't written for Black folks who shoot white people, was it? Fear of blacks was the reason for such a law in the first place. So let us not pretend otherwise. While your global assessment is commendable, that one little excerp that I dared to address sums up the reality that prevades, not just the Twin Lakes community and Sanford, but the entire nation as a whole! Like it or not, that is just the way it is...for now!

If Obama wins re-election, two of his top cabinet members won't seek reappointment.
While scanning through the news channels I heard on CNN or MSNBC that Hillary Clinton and Tim Geitner will not seek re-appointment. Shocked, I tried in vain to find more information on the INTERNET regarding this. Can anyone here clue me in? What the heck is going on? I would think that abandoning the ship of state in mid-term by two ranking officers is symptomatic of something sinister. IS it?
Meritocracy is what we all want
It is very interesting that a White woman would challenge Affirmative Action efforts when so many White women owe their success to it. I smell a rat. Looks like a setup to me. Some curmudgeon in the application process was just waiting for the opportunity to use a White women instead of a White male as the patsy.
I am not familiar with the procedures used at UT to announce who is or isn't accepted for admission. But, since the institution is state run , I assume most documents used in the application process would be subject to scrutiny under the FOIA. Whether Fisher used that avenue to gain access to the pertinent information, I cannot say. Apparently White students ability to gain access to the scores of Black students is an easy task. I wonder, though if such information would be as readily available to an erudite Black student who believes some lower scoring Whites were admitted ahead of him/her.
Meritocracy is what we all want
as well as a fair shake. But, with recent scandals indicating that wide spread cheating occurs with alarming frequency in even our most prestigious learning institutions, test scores of the best qualified could be inflated. Elements in the system have been corrupted in that regard; Some more so than others.
The history of Texas is rife with tales of atrocities against Blacks and that legacy has continued into modern times. So, one can assume from those history lessons that if some of the good people of the Lone Star State would use or condone gerrymandering, murder, and intimidation to keep their fellow Black citizens down
why stop there? For many, MERIT is just an illusion: an ethereal tool used to mask the demon of exclusion. What good is merit when there are so many ways to manipulate it? Among those who bray the loudest against Affirmative Action are the same people who are silent when they see discrimination against Blacks.
