Common Problem Need advice

I have a problem and I suspect I am not alone. I am 81 and have a friend who I have known since third grade. He was and is a fun guy
He was always a Republican and we had our “discussions”.

Unfortunately, he has become a MAGA, first class. I rode with him one day in his car and found that he listened to Alex Jones. Years ago, it was Rush Limbaugh.

We both try to avoid discussing the state of the nation for obvious reasons.

Today, however, he sent me a text in which he compared Trump to Lincoln, in that the press hated both..
I replied “bullshit”. (You know it’s not possible to have a serious discussion with text so I was brief.) He asked why saying Trump has “closed the boarder, deported dangerous criminals and made amazing trade deals.”

I said the US was like a beautiful house with a heating problem that hired Trump for repairs and he proceeded to set fire to the house.
He disagreed and I disagreed with his disagreement. And that ended it.

I just have a hard time dealing with Trumpers and members of my family, including my sister, are the same.

How do you deal with this? Any advice? I am sure I am not alone but it’s upsetting that they just can’t see through the bullshit and lies.
(On a positive note, my niece, who used to be a Trumper hates him but some will never get the con.)

Thanks

Something to gag over....

It’s known as “Don Colossus.”

At 15 feet tall, the statue of President Trump, mounted on its 7,000-pound pedestal, is about the height of a two-story building — a giant effigy cast in bronze and finished with a thick layer of gold leaf.

For more than a year, the golden statue has been at the center of one of the stranger moneymaking ventures of the Trump era. A group of cryptocurrency investors paid $300,000 to have a sculptor create it as a tribute to Mr. Trump, an outspoken crypto proponent.

Then they used it to promote a memecoin called $PATRIOT.

Now, improbably, the project appears close to fruition. A pedestal made of concrete and stainless steel was installed last month on the grounds of Mr. Trump’s golf complex in Doral, Fla. Pastor Mark Burns, one of the organizers of the effort and a friend of Mr. Trump’s, told his collaborators that the president planned to attend the statue’s unveiling there, according to messages reviewed by The New York Times.

“It LOOKS FANTASTIC,” Mr. Trump wrote to Mr. Burns in December.

Army on Fascism from 1945

Army Talk Orientation Fact Sheet/Number 64 1945
(condensed for this post)

Fascism is a way to run a country—it's the way Italy was run, and the way Germany and Japan are run. Fascism is the precise opposite of democracy. The people run democratic governments, but fascist governments run the people.

Fascism is government by the few and for the few. The objective is seizure and control of the economic, political, social, and cultural life of the state. . They make their own rules and change them when they choose. If you don't like it, it's "T.S."

The fascists promised everything to everyone: They would make the poor rich and the rich richer. To the farmers, the fascists promised land through elimination of large estates. To the workers they promised elimination of unemployment—jobs for all at high wages. To the small business men they promised more customers and profits through the elimination of large business enterprises. To big business men and the industrialists they secretly promised greater security and profits through the elimination of small business competitors and trade unions and the crushing of socialists and communists. To the whole nation they promised glory and wealth by conquest. They asserted it was their right, as a "superior people," to rule the world.

Most of the people in America like to be good neighbors. But, at various times and places in our history, we have had sorry instances of mob sadism, lynchings, vigilantism, terror, and suppression of civil liberties. We have had our hooded gangs, Black Legions, Silver Shirts, and racial and religious bigots. All of them, in the name of Americanism, have used undemocratic methods and doctrines which experience has shown can be properly identified as "fascist."

Can we afford to brush them off as mere crackpots? We once laughed Hitler off as a harmless little clown with a funny mustache.

An American fascist seeking power would not proclaim that he is a fascist. Fascism always camouflages its plans and purposes. Hitler made demagogic appeals to all groups and swore: "Neither I nor anybody in the National Socialist Party advocates proceeding by anything but Constitutional methods."

Any fascist attempt to gain power in America would not use the exact Hitler pattern. It would work under the guise of "super-patriotism" and "super-Americanism." Fascist leaders are neither stupid nor naive. They know that they must hand out a line that "sells." Huey Long is said to have remarked that if fascism came to America, it would be on a program of "Americanism."

Fascists in America may differ slightly from fascists in other countries, but there are a number of attitudes and practices that they have in common. Following are three. Every person who has one of them is not necessarily a fascist. But he is in a mental state that lends itself to the acceptance of fascist aims.

1. Pitting of religious, racial, and economic groups against one another in order to break down national unity is a device of the "divide and conquer" technique used by Hitler to gain power in Germany and in other countries. With slight variations, to suit local conditions, fascists everywhere have used this Hitler method. In many countries, anti-Semitism (hatred of Jews) is a dominant device of fascism. In the United States, native fascists have often been anti-Catholic, anti-Jew, anti-Negro, anti-Labor, anti-foreign-born. In South America, the native fascists use the same scapegoats except that they substitute anti-Protestantism for anti-Catholicism.

Interwoven with the "master race" theory of fascism is a well-planned "hate campaign" against minority races, religions, and other groups. To suit their particular needs and aims, fascists will use any one or a combination of such groups as a convenient scapegoat.

The fascist doctrine of hate fulfills a triple mission. By creating disunity—it weakens democracy. By getting men to hate rather than to think—it prevents men from seeking the real cause and a democratic solution to the problem. By fake promises of jobs and security, fascism then tries to lure men to its program as the way out of insecurity.

This is what happens to those that support Trump

A political group with ties to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged $1 million to support a likely challenger to Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., the head of a key Senate committee who provided a pivotal vote for Kennedy’s confirmation as Health and Human Services secretary.

MAHA PAC announced Sunday night it would help bankroll the expected Senate campaign of Louisiana Republican Rep. Julia Letlow, who earned the endorsement of President Donald Trump over the weekend.

Letlow has not formally announced a run for Cassidy’s seat, but Trump’s backing of a potential Republican challenger ensures a heated GOP primary and imperils the incumbent’s reelection chances. Cassidy is one of six Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial in 2021.

“President Trump is committed to ending the chronic disease epidemic, and Louisianans deserve a Senator who will stand with him in that fight,” wrote Tony Lyons, the co-founder of MAHA PAC and a close friend of Kennedy.

“Congresswoman Letlow has proven herself a tireless champion for Louisiana families. We strongly encourage her to answer President Trump’s call and enter this race,” Lyons added.

New Hampshire bishop warns clergy to prepare for 'new era of martyrdom'

CONCORD, N.H. -- A New Hampshire Episcopal bishop is attracting national attention after warning his clergy to finalize their wills and get their affairs in order to prepare for a “new era of martyrdom.”

Bishop Rob Hirschfeld of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire made his comments earlier this month at a vigil honoring Renee Good, who was fatally shot on Jan. 7 behind the wheel of her vehicle by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.

Other religious leaders have also called on Christians to protect the vulnerable amid the uptick in immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, including Most Rev. Sean W. Rowe, the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church.

“We keep resisting, advocating, bearing witness and repairing the breach,” Rowe said during a prayer earlier this week. “We keep sheltering and caring for those among us who are immigrants and refugees because they are beloved by God, and without them, we cannot fully be the church.”

Major Step toward fascism

On Jan. 8, the White House announced the creation of a new division in the Department of Justice for “national fraud enforcement,” to be headed by an assistant attorney general. What makes this move notable is that it will be run out of the White House, under the direct supervision of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Never before has the politicization of justice been so blatant or so dangerous.

Having a prosecutor directly answerable to the president and vice president crosses a line that no other administration has dared to cross. It is the kind of thing one might expect in an autocratic or totalitarian regime, but not in the United States.

The New York Times rightly calls Trump and Vance’s intention to directly oversee a senior DOJ official “one of the administration’s most brazen efforts to date to toss out the traditional boundaries that have long existed between the White House and investigations conducted by federal law enforcement.”

And how did Republicans in the Senate, which will be responsible for confirming the nominee to head the new division, react? Majority Leader John Thune said that the person “would be confirmed swiftly.”
