Old Dominion University gunman was previously convicted for ISIS support, sources say

The gunman who killed one person and wounded two others at a Virginia university campus on Thursday had previously been imprisoned for trying to support ISIS, sources told CBS News.

Law enforcement sources identified the gunman in the Old Dominion University shooting in Norfolk as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Virginia National Guardsman who pleaded guilty in October 2016 to attempting to provide material support to the terror group ISIS. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison and was released early in December 2024, according to his Federal Bureau of Prisons record.

Jalloh was also killed in the shooting.

The shooter walked into a class at Constant Hall, which is part of the College of Business at Old Dominion, and asked if it was an ROTC class, a law enforcement source told CBS News. When someone responded that it was, the shooter opened fire, fatally injuring the class instructor, who was a retired Army officer. The shooting is being investigated as a terror-related attack.

Rep. Jim Clyburn, 85, is running for an 18th term in Congress

Longtime Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., one of the oldest members of Congress, said Thursday that he’ll run for an 18th term in the House, breaking with two other former top Democratic leaders — Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer — who have decided to retire.

"In a few minutes, I’m going to sign the paperwork that’s necessary in order to qualify for the Democratic nomination to run again," Clyburn told a roomful of supporters at an event in Columbia, South Carolina, at the state’s Democratic Party headquarters.

Clyburn, 85, has said in the past he wants to help Democrats take back control of the House in November and elect the nation’s first Black speaker, one of his proteges, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.

Clyburn said he had a phone call on Wednesday with Jeffries, who encouraged him to run again and be a part of his leadership team in the new Congress.

AP: Authorities investigate explosives thrown near NYC mayor's residence as 'ISIS-related terrorism'

NEW YORK (AP) — Two men suspected of bringing explosives to a protest outside New York City’s mayoral mansion were in custody Monday, as authorities probed whether the suspects were inspired by the Islamic State extremist group, the police commissioner said.

No charges had yet been brought against the men, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Nikk, but federal prosecutors and police planned a news conference later in the day. In the meantime, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a morning news conference that the explosives episode “is being investigated as an act of ISIS-inspired terrorism,” using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

Meanwhile, police searched a home in northeastern Pennsylvania’s Middletown Township, and a separate federal investigation was underway in nearby Newtown, local police said. Both inquiries were related to the incident outside New York’s mayoral residence, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a Pennsylvania Republican, wrote in a social media post Sunday.

Stephen Colbert Defies CBS, Says Network Banned Him From Interviewing James Talarico On 'The Late Show'

https://deadline.com/2026/02/stephen-colbert-cbs-james-talarico-interview-1236726609/

UPDATED: At the top of his monologue tonight, Stephen Colbert introduced the Late Show band, announced guest Jennifer Garner and then asked the audience, “You know who is not one of my guests tonight?”

The CBS host then answered his own question.

“That’s Texas state representative James Talarico. He was supposed to be here, but we were told in no uncertain terms by our network’s lawyers, who called us directly, that we could not have him on the broadcast.

“Then, I was told, in some uncertain terms, that not only could I not have him on, I could not mention me not having him on. And because my network clearly does not want us to talk about this…Let’s talk about this.”

WP Talarico Profile: "Will Texas elect a Democratic senator?"

The last time a Democrat won a Senate race in Texas, James Talarico was not even born yet.

The 36-year-old state representative is painfully aware of that as he finds himself at the center of a raging debate over how Democrats can best energize their voters and win back power after their disappointing 2024 losses. He is stepping onto the national scene at a time when his party is eager for younger, more dynamic leaders, especially in red states where its brand has suffered for decades.

“I think I underestimated how much people are hungry for something new and fresh and different in the Democratic Party,” Talarico said, hopeful but still clear-eyed about the potential dangers of President Donald Trump’s second term. “I don’t know if people want fighting just for fighting’s sake, but they do want their leaders to feel the urgency and meet the moment.”

Talarico entered the Senate race in September, when his main primary opponent was former congressman Colin Allred, the party’s unsuccessful 2024 nominee — and a helpful foil for Talarico’s pitch for fresh-faced statewide leadership. But the primary saw a shake-up on the last day of candidate filing in December, when Allred dropped out to make way for an 11th-hour bid by Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a brash national star known for her rhetorical bombast toward Trump and other prominent Republicans.

Pardoned January 6 rioter pleads guilty to threatening US Democratic leader Jeffries

WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - A January 6, 2021, rioter, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump, pleaded guilty to a harassment charge after being accused of threatening to kill U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Christopher Moynihan, 35, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor harassment charge in a hearing in Clinton, New York, and will be sentenced in April. His representative could not immediately be reached.

"Threats against elected officials are not political speech, they are criminal acts that strike at the heart of public safety and our democratic system," Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi said in a statement.

Moynihan, 34, was charged in October after he sent threatening text messages about an appearance Jeffries was scheduled to make in New York City, according to a complaint filed in New York state court in Clinton.

"Hakeem Jeffries makes a speech in a few days in NYC I cannot allow this terrorist to live. ... I will kill him for the future," the text messages read, according to the complaint.

Esquire: "The Next Democratic President Better Be Merciless"

Main thrust of the article:

Assuming it even happens, the process of recovery is not going to be discreet. It’s not going to be painless or easy. It is going to be loud and necessarily bloody. Arms will need to be twisted. Careers will need to be ended. Indictments ought to fly, thick and fast. The republic is going to need radical surgery because the malignancy is everywhere. That is the reality of the next several elections. Any Democratic politician who is not prepared to be merciless is unworthy of support.
