Donald Trump Faces New Impeachment Bid After Speech to Congress (Newsweek)

Democratic Texas Representative Al Green has hit back at Donald Trump after he was kicked out of the president's joint address to Congress on Tuesday, saying that he is "working on" Articles of Impeachment against the president.

(snip)

"I'm working on my articles of impeachment," Green said to reporters on Tuesday after he was removed by the House sergeant-at-arms following multiple interruptions of Trump's address. "This president is unfit. He should not hold the office—34 felony convictions, two times impeached," Green added. Green was removed after protesting Trump's remarks over obtaining a mandate in the election, shouting, "He has no mandate" while pointing toward the president and refusing to take his seat.

The president opened his speech by highlighting his electoral victory as Democrats jeered and booed in response. When Green refused to take his seat, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson ordered him to be removed as Republican lawmakers taunted him with chants of "Hey, Hey, Hey, Goodbye." The removal of an elected official by the sergeant-at-arms during a joint address or State of the Union is virtually unprecedented in modern congressional history.

Green told reporters that he had interrupted Trump's joint address to protest against a "desire to cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security."

STAR OF THE MONTH - BARBARA STANWYCK (Wednesdays)

(Studio publicity - public domain)

Barbara Stanwyck (born Ruby Catherine Stevens; July 16, 1907 – January 20, 1990) was an American actress and dancer. A stage, film, and television star, during her 60-year professional career, she was known for her strong, realistic screen presence and versatility. She was a favorite of directors, including Cecil B. DeMille, Fritz Lang, and Frank Capra, and made 85 films in 38 years before turning to television.

Orphaned at the age of four and partially raised in foster homes, she always worked. One of her directors, Jacques Tourneur, said of her, "She only lives for two things, and both of them are work."[1] She made her debut on stage in the chorus as a Ziegfeld girl in 1923 at age 16, and within a few years was acting in plays. Her first lead role, which was in the hit Burlesque (1927), established her as a Broadway star.

In 1929, she began acting in talking pictures. Frank Capra chose her for his romantic drama Ladies of Leisure (1930). This led to additional leading roles which raised her profile, such as Night Nurse (1931), Baby Face (1933), and the controversial The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933). In 1937, she played the title role in Stella Dallas, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination for best actress. In 1939, she starred in Union Pacific. In 1941, she starred in two screwball comedies: Ball of Fire with Gary Cooper, and The Lady Eve with Henry Fonda. She received her second Academy Award nomination for Ball of Fire, and in the decades since its release The Lady Eve has come to be regarded as a comedic classic, with Stanwyck's performance called one of the best in American comedy.

Other successful films during this period are Meet John Doe (1940) and You Belong to Me (1941), reteaming her with Cooper and Fonda, respectively. By 1944, Stanwyck had become the highest-paid actress in the United States. She starred with Fred MacMurray in the seminal film noir Double Indemnity (1944), playing the wife who persuades an insurance salesman to kill her husband, for which she received her third Oscar nomination. In 1945, she starred as a homemaker columnist in the hit romantic comedy Christmas in Connecticut. The next year, she portrayed the title tragic femme fatale in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. She garnered her fourth Oscar nomination for her performance as an invalid wife in the noir-thriller Sorry, Wrong Number (1948). Stanwyck's film career declined by the start of the 1950s, despite having a fair number of leading and major supporting roles in the decade, the most successful being Executive Suite (1954).

She transitioned to television by the 1960s, where she won three Emmy Awards, for The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1961), the Western series The Big Valley (1966), and the miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983).

She received an Honorary Oscar in 1982, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1986, and several other honorary lifetime awards. She was ranked as the 11th greatest female star of classic American cinema by the American Film Institute.

Jen Psaki Moves to Primetime Weekdays in MSNBC Overhaul (Variety)

By Brian Steinberg

Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary who has become a favorite at MSNBC since joining in 2023, will get even more screen time in front of viewers in April when she takes over the network’s 9 p.m. slot between Tuesday and Friday.

The move is the latest to be unveiled from MSNBC under new leader Rebecca Kutler, who has wasted little time in tearing up the network’s schedule as it faces seismic pressures. MSNBC is grappling not only with the new Trump administration, to which many of its progressive anchors and analysts are directly opposed, but it also faces a big change in its business operations once it is, along with a group of other cable networks, spun off from Comcast in a transaction slated to be completed later this year.

While Rachel Maddow is anchoring 9 p.m. five days a week during the early part of the Trump administration, she will return to hosting only Mondays soon. At that time, Psaki’s show will roll out Tuesday through Friday. Her program, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” has become MSNBC’s most-watched on the weekends and has expanded audiences at 8 p.m. on Mondays. “Since joining MSNBC, Psaki has become a crucial and trusted voice for the network,” Kutler said in a memo on Monday.

“As I shared with many of you a few weeks ago, my goal is to build on the successes that have distinguished MSNBC from its peers,” Kutler said. “We now have one of the most engaged audiences in all of television and are seeing rapid growth across digital, audio, and more. In the years ahead, we must continue to show up for our audiences in this critical moment while simultaneously best positioning ourselves for the future.”

I think Jen's show has been an incredibly strong addition to MSNBC's lineup since she came aboard. Be interesting to see what they do next.

Joy Reid's MSNBC Show Canceled in Major Shake-Up

Updated 6:09 a.m. ET

Joy Reid’s evening news show on MSNBC is being canceled, part of a far-reaching programming overhaul orchestrated by Rebecca Kutler, the network’s new president, two people familiar with the changes said.

The final episode of Ms. Reid’s 7 p.m. show, “The ReidOut,” is planned for sometime this week, according to the people, who were not authorized to speak publicly. The show, which features in-depth interviews with politicians and other newsmakers, has been a fixture of MSNBC’s lineup for the past five years.

MSNBC is planning to replace Ms. Reid’s program with a show led by a trio of anchors: Symone Sanders Townsend, a political commentator and former Democratic strategist; Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee; and Alicia Menendez, the TV journalist, the people said. They currently co-host “The Weekend,” which airs Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The programming shake-up is the first major change made by Ms. Kutler, who was appointed president this month. Ms. Kutler has been drawing up a new programming lineup to jump-start the network’s ratings, which have outperformed rival CNN but lagged behind the longtime ratings leader, Fox News.

MSNBC's New Chief Plots First Moves, Poised to Expand Screen Time for Jen Psaki, 'Weekend' Trio (Variety)

By Brian Steinberg

MSNBC‘s new chief isn’t wasting any time in figuring out where she wants to take the progressive-leaning network as it prepares to be spun off from NBCUniversal and its corporate parent, Comcast.

Rebecca Kutler, who was named president of MSNBC earlier in February, is considering expanding the on-screen presence of Jen Psaki, who currently anchors hours on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings, as well as the trio of personalities who lead “The Weekend,” the roundtable show that airs Saturday and Sunday mornings and is led by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele, according to two people familiar with the discussions.

(snip)

The changes, none of which have not been formally announced, show Kutler moving quickly to steer MSNBC in a tricky moment. With Comcast splitting off the bulk of its cable assets into a separate, publicly-traded company, MSNBC is likely to have to navigate a future cut off from the newsgathering resources of NBC News. At present, a group of traditional news anchors, including Katy Tur and Chris Jansing, fill MSNBC’s weekday hours, offering reporting and journalism that isn’t as dipped in blue as the outlet’s primetime opinion programs. Veteran Andrea Mitchell recently signed off from the noon hour she anchored for decades, and an official replacement has not been unveiled.

(snip)

Both Psaki and “The Weekend” are close to Kutler’s heart. She developed both the trio and “Inside With Jen Psaki.” “The Weekend” has enjoyed a spike in viewership in its time slot since it launched in January of 2024. Executives at MSNBC have clearly been taken with Psaki, a former Biden White House press secretary, since she launched a Sunday hour in March of 2003.

Comment: Like Jen Psaki, not so much "The Weekend." But we'll see where that goes. And the writer's "dipped in blue" comment shows a real lack of knowledge of what mainstream news programming, which MSNBC has always tried to do, should be. MSNBC (or CNN, for that matter) has never been Free Speech TV, which can be described correctly as "dipped in blue." Both channels have tried to keep news as the key to their programming, with opinion taking a back end. Which is the way it should be.
