Here is my opinion for what it is worth. Many of these "good" people minimized the importance of the election and the importance of the President because they would minimize a 4 alarm fire in their own home. The words Fake News is perfect for their ears because they live in a fantasy world that demands a constant state of denial. Even if they are literally starving to death they will more than likely not see the chain of events leading to the consequence. It is a mental addiction to a false security based on fear and very similar really to a drug or alcohol addition (not to minimize these in any way). Even if they hit rock bottom, their minds will very cleverly switch to victim mode where they will claim to be victimized by liberalism and they will double triple down on their assertions. If there is a waking moment for them of self awareness then this is by grace (from God, evolution, the obelisk, who knows) and if it happens it should be celebrated. But more than likely its not going to happen. It is the tribal member looking at the life saving heat of newly discovered fire and shaking their head and saying "magic", "evil" and walking away with their poor family members to freeze to death in ignorance. It is the good German who went along with all of the propaganda while the world burned around them and their families, willing to sacrifice all others, even their own children by holding on with the hope that all of the falsehoods are true. It is re-arranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic.
Self awareness, clarity of the moment, the ability to see beyond the man made rules of the day, and brave compassion for ones fellow beings is what saves mankind and advances mankind past its own self destruction. It is the best of what we are. It is what we want our country to represent.
My mom and Trump
My mom and I have stopped discussing Trump. It is a sore subject between us so we just agree to not talk about it. My mom is 80 yrs old. An intellectual in her time. Saw Kennedy speak and supported him. She is now of diminished capacity so yes I forgive her. But I would like to share some of these conversations.. Here is what she said today and what she believes. "I have a good feeling about Trump.. I don't know why.. Just give him a chance". When I try to give her facts about him she just says "I don't believe it and I don't want to hear it!" She saw Trump early on in the media and I guess what he said resonated with her at that time. She is anti-immigrant so I am guessing that is what she grabbed onto. Everything else she ignored. She says that all of the negative stuff is just the media lying about him and exclaims that she doesn't believe it. She will stop any conversation that states anything negative even if factual. Sadly she depends on the very programs Trump will attack but again she refuses to believe that. I will be the one who has to care for her financially but I don't think she comprehends this either. I am not going to try to convince her. Why anti-immigrant? Because she didn't like some of her noisy neighbors where she lived previously, convinced they had no manners and so stereotyped everyone into the same bucket. Pretty simple. We talked today about reading comprehension in this country, poetry, Herman Hesse books.. And then I mentioned that Trump doesn't read.. And you guessed it "I don't believe that and I don't want to talk about it"....
