Flooding in southern Morocco has killed 32 people - Horrible Video

Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30180239

Flooding in southern Morocco has killed 32 people and six others are missing after the heavy rains, officials say.

A girl of nine was among those who had been swept away by the raging waters of the Tamsourt River, media reports said.

Around 100 mud-brick homes were partly or totally destroyed and 100 roads, including six national highways, were cut off in the floods, officials said.

Flash floods are fairly common in Morocco, which is popular with tourists.

Flooding around the ancient city of Marrakesh left tour buses briefly stranded, local media reported.

Two students are dead at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday morning after one of them opened fire in the cafeteria before turning the gun on himself, according to law-enforcement sources.

Police have not released details, but there are reports of four other people shot about 10:45 a.m.

Austin Joyner, a student at the school, said on Twitter that he saw the shooter come into the cafeteria, walk over to a table, pull out a gun and shoot 4 to 6 students who were sitting there.

Four of the injured were taken by ambulance to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, including one with a head wound. A Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman said they were expecting one victim there, though it wasn’t clear if that person was being transferred from Providence.

At a noon news conference, Marysville Police Commander Robb Lamoureaux called the scene an active investigation and said police officers are still going door-to-door to ensure the school campus is safe. They are leaving tape to mark the doors of the rooms that have been cleared. Officers are finding students and staff members hiding alone or in small groups.

“We are confident that there was only one shooter and that the shooter is dead,” Lamoureaux said. He did not confirm reports of injuries. Students were reporting that he was a freshman.

Some of the school’s 1,200 students were being evacuated from the school, walking out and across the fields with their hands up. Others were being told to stay inside classrooms.

Some were bused to the nearby Shoultes Gospel Hall, where they are being accounted for. Lamoureaux urged parents and family members of students to stay away from the scene, saying authorities would provide information on a location for them to be reunited with students.

At the church, tearful parents and students were being reunited, and hugging.

“I never thought I would be standing here after a school shooting,” said Heather Parker, whose son, Corbin, is a senior. “He’s pretty shook up. He just said ‘I’m okay.’ He was trying to calm me down.”

Adam Holston, 14, a freshman, was just leaving the lunch room when the gunfire broke out. “Everyone just started running. I could hear the gun shots and my heart was racing and we didn’t know what was going on.”

Some ran out to the parking lot, some to the field.

“Someone opened a door and we all ran into classrooms and just stayed there.”

He said all kids have been loaded on buses now. His sister is a senior. He’s been texting with her and she OK.

“The person who everyone thinks did it was just acting normally. It didn’t seem like there was anything wrong.”

Jery Holston has two children in the school now communicating with him by cell phone. They are both OK. Adam is a freshman; Kayliegh is a senior.

Holston said Adam called him this morning yelling, “Dad, dad, hurry, someone is shooting. Please come.” He said his son ran and hid outside in the field by the stadium.

Jery was in Stanwood at the time. “I probably did a hundred miles per hour to get there. I didn’t stop for anything. My heart went into my stomach. As a father, this has been my fear since my kids have been in school, that something like this would happen.”

Ayn Dietrich-Williams, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Seattle, said agents are on their way to Marysville to offer assistance.

Breaking News : Morocco building collapse toll hits 23 + exclusive video today

Source: news24

Casablanca - The death toll after three buildings collapsed in the Moroccan city of Casablanca reached 23, officials said on Monday, after more bodies were recovered from the rubble in the past three days.

The incident occurred in Casablanca's Bourgone district on Friday, at dawn when people in this mostly Muslim country were having their meal in preparation for a new day of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.

A five-floor building, where a sixth floor was illegally being constructed, tumbled and flattened a neighbouring apartment block, the witnesses added.

Authorities said on Sunday that 17 people were still being treated in hospital. Rescue operations were temporarily suspended on Sunday as rescue teams sought more sophisticated equipment, due to the risk of neighbouring houses collapse during the search for bodies.

King Mohamed VI visited the site of the collapse and those treated in hospital.

245 dead in Turkey mine explosion, 120 trapped

A mine explosion in western Turkey has killed 245 people, with 80 injured according to Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, and the toll could rise with many more still trapped.

Erdogan made an announcement declaring that 238 had been killed at a news conference during a visit to the western town of Soma – the location of the disaster – on Wednesday. He added that a further 120 workers remained trapped.

However, Yildiz later confirmed that the death toll had risen to 245, while adding that the fire had still not been fully extinguished.

Earlier in the day, Yildiz told reporters that 787 workers had been in the Soma mine when the explosion hit a power unit. Most of the confirmed dead were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, Yildiz added.

Four of the injured were in a critical condition, according to Yildiz.

More than 360 workers have been evacuated thus far. However, Yidiz said that hopes for the rescue effort were "dimming". "We are worried that this death toll will rise," he told reporters.

"We fear that the numbers could rise further," he stated, adding that it was necessary to complete the rescue operation by dawn.

Rescue workers pumped oxygen into the mine in an attempt to keep trapped miners alive, Reuters reported. A line of police held back thousands of family and fellow workers of the trapped miners who assembled outside of a Soma hospital.

"Fresh air, oxygen is being pumped into the mine. This is the most important thing for our workers down there," Yildiz said.

he mayor of Soma, a district in Manisa, also said the explosion was caused by an electrical fault, Reuters reported. The explosion, which occurred about 1.2 miles below the surface, reportedly disabled an elevator in the mine shaft. The workers are trapped some 2.5 miles from the exit.

Soma is 120 km (75 miles) northeast of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan cancelled a Wednesday trip to Albania in order to visit the site of the blast, his office told Reuters.

"Rescue efforts for our brothers in the mine are ongoing ... God willing, in the coming hours, I hope to receive uplifting news," Erdogan said Tuesday.

Turkey’s worst mining disaster in recent years was a gas explosion in 1992 near the Black Sea port of Zonguldak, which left some 270 workers dead. Since then, Turkey has borne witness to several mining accidents.
