Wagner Moura on why he believes Americans take democracy for granted

Wagner Moura on why he believes Americans take democracy for granted:

"When I was doing 'Civil War,' I was constantly thinking about how differently Brazil reacted to our insurrection — in a better way than you guys did, because Brazil was quick to do the right thing and send the message that you can’t mess with democracy. We sent people to jail. Bolsonaro is in jail.

In America, it’s as if they’re testing, like a kid — they’re like, 'I’m going to do it,' and if there’s no reaction, then what? I feel like the U.S. and its institutions are not responding with appropriate firmness — putting up boundaries, people facing consequences."

World's First Spinal Cord Regeneration Drug Developed By Brazilian Scientists

After a quarter-century of dedicated research, Brazilian scientists have achieved a potential medical breakthrough with the development of polylaminin, claimed to be the world’s first drug capable of regenerating spinal cord injuries.

The groundbreaking treatment was developed by Dr Tatiana Coelho de Sampaio and her research team at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Polylaminin is derived from placental laminin protein and is administered through direct spinal injection.

Initial experimental trials have yielded promising results among patients with paraplegia and quadriplegia caused by spinal cord ruptures. According to reports, several trial participants experienced complete recovery, regaining full mobility without experiencing lasting adverse effects. The drug works by regrowing damaged nerve fibers while simultaneously reducing inflammation, both crucial factors in restoring motor function.

These encouraging human trial results align with earlier animal studies, where polylaminin demonstrated significant improvements in post-injury locomotion through neuron regeneration and anti-inflammatory properties.

Venezuela receives 40 tons of medical supplies from Brazil

A first shipment of 40 tons (of 300 tons pledged in total) of donated medical supplies from Brazil arrived Friday night at Maiquetía airport, replacing inventory that was destroyed in the U.S. bombing of medical warehouses in La Guaira on January 3.

This shipment includes 110,000 treatment kits for hemodialysis, in addition to specialized medical supplies, dialyzers, catheters and solutions, to be used in the National Hemodialysis and Nephrology Program of Venezuela’s national public health system.

This is the fourth shipment received this week to replace the destroyed supplies and equipment.

Brazil to send medical supplies to dialysis center destroyed in U.S. bombing of Venezuela

Brazil’s government will send urgently needed supplies for dialysis patients in Venezuela after a U.S. bombing destroyed a center responsible for renal treatment and medicine distribution. The announcement was made on Monday (5) by Health Minister Alexandre Padilha during a press conference in Brasília.

“We are mobilizing, through our public health system and in coordination with private companies in Brazil, dialysis supplies and essential medicines,” Padilha said. “This is humanitarian support for the Venezuelan people, whose distribution center was attacked.”

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the U.S. airstrike destroyed a facility in the state of La Guaira that served both as a medicine depot and a treatment center for kidney patients.

Padilha stressed the humanitarian and reciprocal nature of the assistance. He recalled that during the collapse of oxygen supplies in Manaus at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Venezuela sent 135,000 cubic meters of oxygen to Brazil to save lives. In 2021, the Venezuelan government coordinated directly with Amazonas state authorities to deliver oxygen trucks, after Brazil’s federal government at the time refused to accept the aid.
