Does Putin know what he's getting into with overtures to China?

Sorry, I have no links. This is all from what I've heard driving around all night listening to POTUS, CNN, BBC etc on SiriusXM and YouTube videos from Beau of the 5th and similar.

Russia is down to sending untrained prisoners and old men as cannon fodder with the predictable results. Intercepted cell phone conversations reveal complete lack of leadership. One call noted (paraphrase) "we're out here running around like chickens with our heads cut off while the Ukrainians are sitting there out of range pushing fire buttons and drinking coffee".

Apparently Putin's latest bright idea is to appeal to China for trained troops to deploy in Ukraine and turn the tide of the war.

I've been worried about China invading a weakened Russia. They've been holding war games near Taiwan but we don't know the gaming scenario.

So if there are Chinese troops in Ukraine, what's to prevent them from mopping up the rest of the Russian forces, seizing Crimea and giving it back to Ukraine, making a friend in the region, then marching on the Caucasus oilfields and Moscow?

Nukes? China's nukes work just fine. I'm betting Russia's nukes have gone through decades of neglect just like the rest of their equipment and won't even launch.

Had to take my work car in because it was farting

I was driving around through lightning and heavy gusting winds. I was listening to a comedy station on SiriusXM and it seemed odd that the comedians were telling a lot of fart jokes. Then there was a fart during a commercial. Turned off the radio and discovered it was coming from the driver's side front of the vehicle. I began to suspect it was a loose brake pad or a bad bearing.

I stopped and had a look under the hood and discovered that I was out of radiator fluid in the reservoir so I topped it up. My boss does all the work on the vehicles (it's my car but I'm not going to complain about free oil changes, brake and rotor replacement etc) so I phoned him and he said bring it over. On the way there, no farting. New theory, it was sucking sounds from the coolant system (boss said it doesn't work like that).

So he looked under the hood, checked belts, fluids, discovered a leak and now he's all excited about ripping half the engine apart, checked the driver's side wheel but couldn't find anything wrong so he said drive it home and bring it back today.

Got it out on the highway and it's farting real bad so I decided to get off onto a regular street. As I was turning, got hit with a gust of wind - fart. Drove along the street, wind gust - fart. Wait a minute.

Got home and took a look at the front of the car and found the problem. A wind gust had torn the front spoiler half off and every time I went fast or got hit by a gust of wind it would resonate - hence the farting noise.

Boss said I don't need it, just rip the rest of it off.

So how's that GOTV/Poll tax thing coming along?

I've been reading horror stories on other forums of the near impossibility for some voters to get registered due to the logistical nightmare caused by Republican voter disenfranchisement efforts, requiring people to be transported half-way across a state to find a DMV and a Kafkaesque ratsnest of conflicting document requirements to the point where to get some documents, you need to already have that document (how's that for a run-on sentence).

One person was making it practically their full-time job driving people around, paying fees and wallowing through red tape.

Sounds like there needs to be some level of organization here. Is there any in the offing?

I've got loads of raspberries this year. I'm scared.

I live in sort of Northern Canada. When I got my raspberry plants I got the wrong kind and I'm lucky to get any before first frost.

They're absolutely loaded with ripe raspberries and more on the way. I got about 1 1/2 litres off about 12 bushes.

That's just wrong.

is going on?

Google Nest scared the hell out of me last night

Craftygal is in a wheelchair/scooter and can't reach the light switches. I originally installed a couple of Kasa plug switches and left it at that. My daughter had Alexa and showed me what it could do but I figured I was already in the Google world (I had some Nest cameras before Google bought them) so I may as well go with Google Home.

I bought a bunch of networked lights for the ceiling fixtures but I still had two Kasa switches left over so I put one on a floor lamp in Craftygal's room and one in my room. Remember, they're just over glorified plugs, they have no way of knowing what's plugged into them. The Kasa switch with my light plugged into it is called "bedside". I've got it as part of my Bedroom zone but Google House is having trouble recognizing that, probably because it was added later. Hence Google gives the lengthy response it would give if I was turning off the kitchen zone lights from the Bedroom zone.

I work crazy hours so I don't have a set bed time, but the last thing I do at "night" is "Hey, Google...bedside off." Unless Google misunderstands me and starts ranting about something or other, the light goes out (ie. plug turned off) and Google says "OK, turning off the Bedside".

Last night it announced "Ok, turning off the Bedside...Good night".

I'm scared.

Could you people please take your rain back? We're flooding up here

About 15 years ago I worked for the Alberta Forest Service. We'd get thunderstorms in May with a bit of rain and by June we'd be in drought conditions with everybody on high alert for fire season.

We've had torrential rain for the past week. I've got water in my basement for the first time since I've owned the house - about 25 years. Another neighbour is flooded. The back alley has 6 inches of water in it.

I understand you guys are having a record heat wave. is going on?

Why is the firearms issue being treated as a zero sum game?

Hi. I'm TrogL and I'm an alcoholic. I attend AA meetings. I chair AA meetings. I am not a spokesperson for AA.

I have read and heard considerable criticism of AA. I do not want to discuss that here. Most of it consists of "AA does not have 100% success rate therefore it's useless". I know we don't have anywhere's near that kind of success. I've watched people come and go. Hell, it's right in "How it works" that's read at every meeting. I'm satisfied with whomever manages to get any sort of sobriety.

So why does gun control, psychological testing, school security etc. have to be a zero sum game? If one of them or a combination reduces gun violence why not attempt it?

I looked into a Ukrainian refugee child's eyes

I currently make my living handing out parking tickets in private lots. I came across a vehicle parked in handicapped. I was about to write a ticket when the owner came out. She had a little boy (3?) in a stroller. In near perfect English she explained that she had just arrived from Ukraine and her paperwork hadn't caught up with her and she'd just moved in.

She suddenly saw my dog in the back seat and was delighted. I asked if her son wanted to meet my dog so she got him out of the stroller and I coaxed Bear out of the back seat. The boy, looking tentative, eventually petted Bear on the nose then looked like he was going to cry and during this I got a look into his eyes.

I'm old. I've met plenty of veterans who've been through hell. They had the same eyes.
