A Missouri lawmaker sold a 'potential cure' for coronavirus. It was a fake stem cell treatment, feds
Source: Washington Post
As she planned a run for the Missouri House last April, Patricia Ashton Derges went on local TV to trumpet a stem cell treatment offered at three clinics she owns as a potential cure for the coronavirus.
But when federal officials began investigating the claim, they found Derges was making misleading statements about the treatment, prosecutors said it didnt actually include any stem cells.
Derges, a 63-year-old Republican who was elected to the state House in November, now faces 20 criminal charges, including wire fraud and distribution by means of the Internet without a valid prescription, a federal grand jury indictment unsealed on Tuesday revealed.
This defendant abused her privileged position to enrich herself through deception, said U.S. Attorney Tim Garrison in a statement on Monday. As an elected official and a health care provider, she deserves to be held to a high standard.

Tokyo Olympics Chief Suggests Limits for Women at Meetings
Source: New York Times
TOKYO Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics, already facing rising costs and significant public opposition to this summers Games, faced a new furor on Wednesday after the president of the Tokyo organizing committee suggested women talk too much in meetings.
The president, Yoshiro Mori, stoked a social media backlash after news reports emerged of his comments demeaning women during an executive meeting of the Japanese Olympic Committee that was held online.
On boards with a lot of women, the board meetings take so much time, Mr. Mori, 83, said to laughter, according to a report in the Asahi Shimbun, one of the countrys largest daily newspapers. Women have a strong sense of competition. If one person raises their hand, others probably think, I need to say something too. Thats why everyone speaks.
Mr. Mori, a former prime minister, was responding to a question asking him to comment on the Olympic committees plan to increase the number of women board members to more than 40 percent of the total.

Biden commits to $1,400 checks in call to House Democrats
Source: The Hill
President Biden said during a call with House Democrats on Wednesday that he is committed to boosting stimulus checks to $2,000 by giving most Americans another $1,400 in direct payments in a new round of coronavirus relief.
Biden also urged House Democrats to go big, not small on a new COVID-19 relief package and to stick together as they sell his nearly $2 trillion stimulus plan to the American people, according to a source on the call.
"I'll have your back. I ask that you have mine, Biden said.
We have to go big, not small, Biden told the lawmakers. Every major poll shows the American people are with us.

New Federal Order on Mask Compliance on Public Transportation (email)
Colleagues,
Since April 2020, New York State and the MTA have required all employees and customers to wear a proper mask covering their nose and mouth when inside the MTA transportation system.
On January 29th, 2021, the Federal government issued a new executive order which requires everyone to wear a mask on public transportation, including in our system.
Specifically, the new federal order strictly defines a proper mask and going forward prohibits the use of scarfs, gators, ski masks, bandanas, face shields, a shirt or sweater collar, loosely woven/knitted masks, vinal/plastic/leather masks, masks with slits/exhaust valves/punctures, or loosely/improperly fitting masks.

Scoop: Schiff lobbying Newsom to be California's next AG
AxiosRep. Adam Schiff is quietly lobbying Gov. Gavin Newsom and his allies to appoint him Californias next attorney general, according to people familiar with the matter.
Why it matters: If Newsom selects Schiff, chair of the House Intelligence Committee and a confidant of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Democrats would lose a powerful party voice in the U.S. House and temporarily give up a seat in their slim 221-211 majority.
Nonetheless, Pelosi has given her approval to Schiffs bid, a clear sign she thinks she can manage without him. according to people familiar with the matter. Spokespersons for Schiff and Pelosi declined comment.
The attorney general's job also would better position Schiff, a high-profile Democrat who led the Russia investigation into then-President Trump, to run for Sen. Dianne Feinsteins seat, should the 87-year-old decide not to run for reelection in 2024.

GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville says he doesn't know anything about Marjorie Taylor Greene because bad weather has prevented him from reading the news
Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama said Tuesday that he can't comment on allegations against Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene because bad weather has prevented him from reading the news.
"I haven't even looked at what all she's done," he told the CNN producer Ted Barrett. "I'd have to hold back a statement on that. Travel in this weather it's been a little rough looking at any news or whatever."
Tuberville, who ousted former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones last year, appeared to be referring to the snow Washington has gotten over the last few days. The newly sworn-in senator, who was previously a career college football coach, recently denied attending a meeting at the Trump International Hotel in Washington with members of then-President Donald Trump's inner circle to discuss how to overturn the 2020 election results on January 5, the day before the Capitol insurrection. But photos posted on social media appear to show him at the hotel that day.
