SC man opened door to J6 rioters gets 3 years in prison

A South Carolina man who opened a door to Jan. 6 Capitol rioters and has since renounced former President Donald Trump’s false allegations of a stolen 2020 election was sentenced Monday to three years in federal prison.

George Tenney III, 36, of Anderson County was sentenced by U.S. Judge Thomas Hogan, who said he could not ignore “the facts of this riot.” Tenney’s sentence was one of the stiffest handed down to date of any of the 19 people from South Carolina charged in the U.S. Capitol riots.

Evidence from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, captured on surveillance tapes, showed that Tenney had not only grappled briefly with officers several times but pushed open a door that allowed nearly 50 other rioters to enter the Capitol in the initial stages of the riot.

Once in the building, some of those 50 rioters went on to fight with police, federal prosecutor Alexis Loeb told the judge. She had urged the judge to give Tenney four years in prison.

Toward the end of the 80-minute hearing, held in a courtroom in Washington, Tenney wept as he told the judge that he had been caught up in various postings on social media that enveloped him in “fear and anger” and made him think his children were in danger.

In a letter Tenney wrote to the judge, he went further, saying the former president had spread lies about a stolen election that caused him to do what he did. The letter was made public last week and made national headlines.

As a consequence of following such falsehoods, Tenney told the judge he has lost his job, his career as a high-end cook and was forced to cash out his person and his 401(k) retirement fund.

The judge said he was giving Tenney less than the four years asked by prosecutors because he wanted to avoid an unfair disparity with the probation sentence given to a friend of Tenney’s who had accompanied him that day. That man, who received probation, not only avoided violent actions but appeared to try to stop Tenney from fighting with police, the judge noted. The judge also said he was mindful of Tenney’s remorse.

Fork it over, Rudy. 😂

Rudy Giuliani blew off a Manhattan court hearing Friday where a judge said the former New York City mayor would be tossed behind bars if he doesn’t fork over $225,000 plus lawyer fees to his ex-wife by early next month.

The ultimatum came at a hearing in the divorce case between Giuliani, 78, and former wife Judith Giuliani — who claimed in a lawsuit he’s fallen behind on payments totaling $262,000 owed under terms of their 2019 divorce settlement.

“If the amount is not paid by that date, I’m going to be forced — unfortunately because it’s not something I want to do — I’m going to be forced to remand the defendant into custody,” Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Katz said at the hearing where Giuliani was a no-show.

The judge said he would enter a civil contempt order against Giuliani until the sum was paid.

“There is no dispute that the judgment has not been complied with because the defendant admitted last time that he owes money,” Katz said. “He clearly has failed to meet his obligations.”

The judge said since Giuliani did not appear in court or file evidence disputing Judith’s claim, he’d grant her request for a default judgment against Giuliani for $225,442 plus another $10,000 for attorney fees.

US chess master denies using wireless 'anal beads' to win game.

For all of the scandals that have rocked the world of elite chess in recent years, rumors that a 19-year-old grandmaster used anal beads and artificial intelligence to beat the world's top player might be the most bizarre.

Speculation has grown online that San Francisco-born Hans Niemann, a relative newcomer to the sport, inserted wireless vibrating anal beads into his body before his victorious match against World No. 1 grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, 31, last week.

Chess fans have speculated that an accomplice watching the match at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis used a chess program to determine the perfect move, and then sent encoded instructions via the vibrating sex toy.

Niemann has vehemently denied cheating on this occasion, but critics note that his Elo rating, which gauges the strength of chess players, shot to 2701 after his victory over Carlsen, up from just 2484 in January 2021.

Cheating in chess is rare, but can be achieved by hiding computers in shoes or jackets that signal outcomes predicting the game and giving the player an advantage over their adversary.

With the explosion of chess computer programs and devices like cell phones and Bluetooth, tournament officials have had to navigate a minefield of challenges in detecting cheaters in recent years.

At the top levels of competition, players are now routinely scanned with metal detectors before playing in tournaments.

Russian oil chief Maganov dies in 'fall from hospital window'

The chairman of Russia's Lukoil oil giant, Ravil Maganov, has died after falling from a hospital window in Moscow, reports say.

Maganov, 67, was being treated at the city's Central Clinical Hospital and died from his injuries, sources told Russian media.

He is the latest of a number of high-profile business executives to die in mysterious circumstances.
Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, Lukoil called for the war to end.

Early in March, the Lukoil board called for the conflict in Ukraine to end as soon as possible, expressing its sympathy to victims of "this tragedy".

Ravil Maganov took over as chairman of Lukoil's board two years ago. He began working for the private oil company in 1993.

In May a former senior manager at Lukoil, Alexander Subbotin, reportedly died also under unusual circumstances.
