Bush transparency claims tested by unreleased Bacardi emails

To hear Jeb Bush tell it, he's the anti-Hillary Clinton, a veritable open-book about his time as Florida governor, especially when it comes to publicly releasing his emails -- an issue that has dogged the Democratic presidential front-runner for months.

Bush rolled out his cybersecurity plan recently in a meeting with tech leaders in Seattle, while continuing to blast Clinton: "It should not be too much to ask government officials to abide by the laws and rules in place to safeguard our national security."

And when he released his emails from his time as governor in an e-book last month, "Reply All." his campaign blasted out a website and video with a clear message: Bush is an "open book" and Clinton is "elusive and evasive."

"With the release of his ebook, Governor Bush continues to show his genuine openness and transparency. The emails weren't written with an eye toward future office. They are the earliest form of 'Jeb Unfiltered,'" the Bush campaign wrote on its site. The Bush team then posted a pre-written tweet for supporters to blast out: "While she dodges and hides, Governor Bush has consistently chosen the path of transparency. The contrast couldn't be clearer."

But a 2002 trade battle between Bacardi and Cuba over the rights to the "Havana Club" label shows Bush's transparency has its limits and shows some details are missing from the Bush email repository.

'Stuff Happens' Comment Creates Firestorm For Jeb Bush

Jeb Bush sparked controversy yet again with his word choice on the campaign trail Friday.

When asked about Thursday's shooting at an Oregon community college, the former Florida governor argued for caution against more gun control as an instant reaction, saying that "stuff happens, there's always a crisis" you have to respond to when in leadership.

"I had this challenge as governor," Bush said of the way government should respond after such incidents. "Look, stuff happens, there's always a crisis. And the impulse is always to do something, and it's not necessarily the right thing to do."

Bush wasn't flippant in discussing the tragedy on Thursday, earlier calling it "heartbreaking." But when asked about the appropriate response to these types of incidents, Bush cautioned that "more government" wasn't "necessarily the answer."

The "stuff happens" part of his remark is what many on Twitter and Democratic opponents immediately zeroed in on.

Women, Wear This Feminist Artist's Anti-Rape Cloak To Definitely Not Get Raped

Women, Wear This Feminist Artist's Anti-Rape Cloak To Definitely Not Get Raped
"No one is ever asking for it. We shouldn't be asking women to cover up, we should be educating people about consent."

____
So, in case there was any ambiguity: Maple does not actually want anyone to wear her large, black cloak. "People should be able to wear whatever they like without the fear of being raped ... So by wearing a garment from head to toe, I am now completely safe from rape in any place, anywhere, any context. I am no longer 'asking for it.'"

The artist hopes her piece will force some to rethink the ways they talk about rape and abuse. "No one is ever asking for it. We shouldn't be asking women to cover up, we should be educating people about consent. It feels like the issue is pressed onto women and how they can avoid this situation when there should be more focus on the perpetrator."

Australia to deport American anti-abortion activist as threat to women

An American anti-abortion activist is expected to be deported from Australia, after the nation’s highest court ruled Friday that he posed a threat to public order amid concerns he could incite violence against women.

Troy Newman, president of the Kansas-based anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, was detained at Melbourne Airport on Thursday after trying to enter Australia even though officials had already canceled his visa.

The battle to prevent Newman from coming to Australia for a speaking tour began earlier this week, after a lawmaker sent a letter to Immigration Minister Peter Dutton saying Newman could pose a threat to community safety.

“I am most concerned that Mr. Newman’s call for abortionists to be executed could lead to threats or the commission of acts of violence against women and medical professionals,” wrote Terri Butler, a member of the opposition Labor Party.

Immigration officials then revoked Newman’s visa.

Newman, who co-authored a book that suggested doctors who perform abortions are committing a crime egregious enough to warrant the death penalty, denied that he posed a threat to anyone.

Dept Says Cop Followed Procedure When He Mistook a 70-Yo Man’s Stroke for DUI and Beat Him

Police refuse to investigate an off-duty officer of using excessive force after mistaking an elderly stroke victim for a drunk driver. Immediately after throwing a 70-year-old man out of his truck, the cop restrained him on the ground by pressing his knee into a blocked artery on the side of the elderly man’s neck. Although he repeatedly informed the officer that he was suffering from a stroke, the enraged cop continued to manhandle him until other officers finally arrived.

While driving to Walmart around 6 p.m. on Sunday, 70-year-old James Miller began feeling dizzy and ill before veering off the road and accidentally hitting a house with his pick-up truck. Instead of correctly reading the situation, off-duty Columbia police Sgt. Scott Hedrick ran out of the house and immediately pulled Miller out of the vehicle. After slamming the elderly man to the ground, Hedrick pressed his knee into a blocked artery on the right side of Miller’s neck.

“He had my arm twisted behind my back. I said it was hurting and he said, ‘I’ll break your arm,’” Miller told FOX 4.

Although Miller repeatedly asked Sgt. Hedrick to remove his knee because Miller believed that he was having a stroke, the off-duty cop ignored his pleas and accused him of being drunk without even bothering to smell his breath. A Marshall police officer later arrived at the scene and found Hedrick restraining the compliant elderly man on the ground. After placing the 70-year-old in handcuffs, the officer gave Miller a sobriety test and verified he was sober.

New York men make $1,000 a week by waiting in lines

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A New York entrepreneur said he makes up to $1,000 a week by offering a simple service -- waiting in long lines.

Robert Samuel, founder of business Same Ole Line Dudes, said he makes up to $1,000 a week by holding places in lines for product releases, sample sales, Broadway shows, Saturday Night Live tickets and other events.

Samuel said he and his team of professional "waiters" charge $25 for the first hour per line-sitter and they each charge $10 for each additional half hour. He told Salon he recently made $1,000 by waiting 48 hours outside the Apple store in the Meatpacking District for a customer seeking an iPhone 6s.

"I've sat outside in rain, sleet, snow, hot weather, very freezing cold weather..." Same Ole Line Dudes employee Adonis Porch said.

Samuel, who described his business as "like Uber for line waiting," said he has a formula for choosing a line when there are multiple options.

Cops mistake autistic man's inability to speak as non cooperating. Tazed him. Lawsuit filed

Torruella’s ordeal began on July 23, 2014, when the autistic man ran off from his Baltazar's home at around 10 p.m., the suit says. When cops found him near E. 152nd St. and Melrose Ave., they mistook his inability to speak as not cooperating, and Tasered him, court papers claim.

“Taking an autistic person and Tasering him when he’s basically just lost is not reasonable,” attorney Dave Thompson told The News.

Torruella was taken to Lincoln Hospital and was released back into his mother’s custody after not being charged with a crime, according to court papers. He still has scars on his left side from the police stun gun, the suit said.

The NYPD's use of the Taser was excessive force, and violates Torruella's rights under the federal Americans with Disabilities act, the suit alleged.

The NYPD's Patrol Guide allows cops to apprehend an "emotionally disturbed person" if it is "necessary," — though Torruella's mother said that her son is disabled, not violent.

woman forced out of her home naked at 1am, walks 8 miles, sits behind neighbor's house for 30 hours

Michigan wife walks eight miles naked after she was forced to strip and kicked out of home by husband

A Michigan man was arrested after his battered wife walked eight miles naked in what appeared to be a horrible case of domestic violence.

Brian Kittinger, 64, forced his wife to take off her clothes and leave their Albion home at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office said.

The 63-year-old wife found her way to a home belonging to an elderly woman whom she knew, authorities said. Without any clothes, she had purposely stayed away from main streets in the city.

The naked woman picked that particular home because she did not believe the elderly woman would spot her. She ended up staying 30 hours, until Wednesday, before the homeowner located her and alerted authorities.

Saxton and detectives said the woman walked, sometimes ducking into ditches when vehicles approached, until she reached a home in the 13000 block of 28-Mile Road on the outskirts of Albion.

The Kittingers operate a lawn care business and Saxton said the owner of the home on 28-Mile Road is a customer. Marilyn Kittinger was familiar with the residence and stopped there, Saxton said.

“She didn’t want to walk into the city because of her predicament of no clothing and she noticed the residence where they take care of the lawn,” Saxton said. “It was an elderly lady and she went to the back patio and pulled up a chair and ate some apples off a tree.”

Kittinger hid outside the home from sometime during the day Monday until late Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Saxton said windows looking over the patio were covered and the resident of the home did not know Kittinger was there until she heard a noise Tuesday afternoon.

“She didn’t go out there and didn’t hear anything until she heard something hitting the wall,” Saxton said. “She heard some noise and went out and the resident knew Marilyn and said, ‘Marilyn, you are on the news.’ ”

Saxton said Marilyn Kittinger asked the woman not to call the police, but the woman did.

Infant bitten 27 times (by another child), unlicensed daycare shut down (warning.. bite pictures)

Investigators shut down a home day care operation after they said an infant was bitten 27 times by another child.

Child Care Licensing ordered the homeowner to cease operations Monday after an investigation revealed she had been operating out of a home on Bentwood View without a license. Investigators found eight children in the home and determined it had been in operation for eight years.

The infant, who was rushed to a hospital Friday, had pronounced bite marks all over his body, including his eyes, cheeks, legs, stomach and back. The parents of the baby, who asked not to be identified, said the day care operator waited four hours to call them and did so only after the baby's injuries did not fade away.

KENS 5 is not naming the operator because she has not been criminally charged.

A San Antonio Police Department spokesman confirmed Tuesday the case is under investigation by its sex crimes unit. The spokesman said it does not appear a sex crime took place; instead, the unit has taken on the case because it involves the possibility that a crime was committed against a child.

Child Care Licensing ordered the homeowner to stop operations after an investigation revealed she was running with no permit from a house on Bentwood View. Researchers discovered it’d been in operation and discovered eight kids in the house.

Friday the baby, who had been rushed into a hospital, had pronounced bite marks around his body, including cheeks, his eyes, legs, abs and back.

Because she’s not been charged, the operator is not being named by kENS 5. A San Antonio Police Department spokesman confirmed the case is by its own sex crimes unit.

If investigators discover something could have already been carried out to stop the child’s injuries the operator could face charges of child neglect or harm to your young child by omission.

Mother speaks out after baby bitten 27 times

SAN ANTONIO -- One mother wants to warn other parents after her child was bitten 27 times at a day care and rushed to the emergency room, according to state investigators.

That mother is telling Eyewitness News first hand what happened and the warning signs she saw for weeks.

Jeanette Betancourt said she's been taking her son to the home day care in question over the last month.

She noticed her baby came home once with a scratch on his face and then a red mark on the back of his head.

Betancourt said the day care operator had an answer every time about what happened and always asked Jeanette if she was going to take her son to see a doctor.

Friday, Betancourt rushed the child to the emergency room after she was called to come to the day care right away. She found her four month old baby covered in bite marks.

"He wasn't crying. He wasn't really moving. He was just kind of there, " said Betancourt.
