New book claims Trump may have called Dingell pretending to be reporter

ANN ARBOR, MI — The day after President Donald Trump verbally attacked U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell and her late husband, former Congressman John Dingell, at a Michigan rally in December 2019, Dingell said she got a strange phone call.

It was from someone claiming to be a Washington Post reporter, whose name she didn’t know, calling her cell phone from an unknown number, said Dingell, D-Ann Arbor.

As the call went on, Dingell grew convinced the person with whom she was speaking was the president pretending to be someone else, which Trump has done before.

That call is now documented in “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America,” a new book by New York Times political reporter Maggie Haberman.

“When she answered, the man on the other end identified himself as a Washington Post reporter, and said he knew her husband from his investigations in Congress,” Haberman writes in the book. “The name he gave was not one she recognized. The man asked Dingell if she was looking for an apology from Trump. No, she replied, merely that people could be civil to one another. As the man talked, Dingell couldn’t shake the idea that his voice sounded like that of the forty-fifth president.”

The Dropkick Murphys put their spin on Woody Guthrie lyrics in new album

A new album from Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys drops on Friday. “This Machine Still Kills Fascists” takes its name from a phrase American singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie once had painted on his guitars.

It’s not the only way the band incorporates Woody Guthrie into their new album: They also take a personal spin on some of his previously unreleased songs.

During the making of the album, frontman Ken Casey and the band met with Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, and her son, Cole. Originally, Casey worried Guthrie’s family would reject every idea the band had.

“[Nora] had this real trust in us with what we've done with the lyrics,” Casey says. “All along we did have the plan to do a full album of his unpublished lyrics because you feel like you're really helping to bring some history to light because he's got hundreds of pages … He probably had music to them, but nobody knows what it was because he never recorded it.”

New CBO report: The poorest *half* of America -- ~150 million people -- hold only *2 percent* of the country's total wealth

Wealth of top 10 percent has grown markedly since 1989

That tiny little line at the bottom of this chart is half the country

William Rivers Pitt memorial fundraiser for Lola:

Our beloved friend and colleague William Rivers Pitt, a brilliant and soulful writer whose work moved the hearts of millions, has passed.

We are shaken beyond words. The world has lost a great mind and an even greater heart.

Soon, we will share much more about Will, and our love for him. We will surely, in many ways, be memorializing Will for as long as we all live.

But for now: If you know Will, you know he loved his nine-year-old daughter Lola more than anything, and would want her taken care of. We’ve worked with Will’s family to create this fundraiser in the hopes of raising some money to support Lola's needs, including her future education.

All funds raised will go directly to a trust for Lola. Please give what you can.
