Evers' re-election campaign trying to get attack ad off the air

KENOSHA — Gov. Tony Evers' re-election campaign is trying to get an attack ad, targeting how the Democrat responded to riots in Kenosha last summer, pulled off the air.

The ad in question features a Kenosha businesswoman who claims that Evers did not send help to Kenosha until after two people — Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum — died; the two men were killed by Kyle Rittenhouse on Aug. 25, the third night of unrest in the city.

Tony for Wisconsin, Evers' campaign, claims the statements in the ad should be considered false advertising, since National Guard troops were deployed to Kenosha less than 12 hours after Jacob Blake, a black man, was shot by a white Kenosha police officer, Rusten Sheskey, who was later cleared of wrongdoing in the case. Repeatedly, Evers' office has said it "met every request the city and county of Kenosha asked us" during the unrest.

On Aug. 24, the second night of protesting, there were 125 National Guardsmen on the ground in Kenosha; on the third night, the night of the Rittenhouse shootings, 250 were on the ground; by the fourth night, there were 750; and 2,000 by the fifth night.

Joe Biden taps Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as Luxembourg ambassador

President Joe Biden has nominated Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg.

The White House announced the appointment Wednesday. Barrett still needs Senate confirmation to serve, but the White House issued a statement with Barrett, a Democrat, saying he’s proud to be nominated and looks forward to serving. Until then, he said, he will remain as mayor.

Democratic lawmaker calls for campaign donations to defeat COVID-stricken GOP senator

A Madison Democratic lawmaker is facing blowback for soliciting campaign contributions to defeat Republican state Sen. Andre Jacque, a mask and vaccine mandate opponent who was hospitalized last week with COVID-19 and whom a colleague said was in need of prayers.

Jacque’s spokesperson, Matt Tompach, declined to comment on the De Pere Republican’s condition Tuesday, days after Rep. Shae Sortwell, R-Two Rivers, posted on his Facebook page asking followers to pray for Jacque, who was hospitalized on Aug. 16 after testing positive for COVID-19.

“He is in serious need of your prayers tonight,” Sortwell said Friday. “He is in the hospital with COVID-induced pneumonia.”

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing two people with knowledge of Jacque's condition, reported Tuesday evening that Jacque on Monday was intubated and is breathing on a ventilator.

On Aug. 17, Sen. Kelda Roys, D-Madison, tweeted in reference to Jacque’s attendance at two legislative committee meetings at the state Capitol days before his hospitalization. In at least one meeting, Jacque spoke without wearing a mask, which Roys called “selfish, irresponsible, dangerous behavior.”

Nass seeking permission to sue after UW System refuses to submit COVID-19 policies for review

A key Republican lawmaker says he’s seeking permission to sue the UW System after President Tommy Thompson vowed to reject a JCRAR request to submit COVID-19 policies as rules by Sept. 2.

The committee’s Co-chair Sen. Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, said he will ask Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, R-Oostburg, to take legal action against the System after the deadline.

“It is sad that Interim President Tommy Thompson has once again shown his belief in big government control over the rights of individuals to make their own health related decisions,” Nass said in a statement Tuesday.

He accused the System of attempting to “banish” unvaccinated people from campuses despite Thompson’s comments doubling down on his refusal to require immunizations against COVID-19. Nass also said different rules apply to those attending football games, though UW-Madison is requiring masks for attendees while they are indoors.

Johnson pushes Ivermectin and vaccine conspiracies despite federal warning

Sen. Ron Johnson has made multiple podcast and radio appearances this week in which he pushes Ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19 while fear mongering about vaccinations. And he’s continued to do so, even after clear warnings that his message is dangerous.

Johnson, who has regularly argued for the use of unproven drugs such as Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin as treatments for COVID-19, appeared on the shows of Wisconsin right wing radio host Vicki McKenna and Washington Times opinion editor Cheryl Chumley to criticize the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s decision to fully authorize Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine and advocate for people to take Ivermectin to treat the disease.

Ivermectin is commonly used to deworm livestock, and although it is approved for use in humans to treat parasitic infection, has not been shown to be effective at preventing COVID-19 infection or treating patients with the disease.

This week, following a prominent push by figures such as Johnson on right wing media outlets such as Fox News, the FDA was forced to put out a warning against the use of Ivermectin.

GOP to spend "$680,000, at least, to start" in hunt for disproven "steal"

On Wednesday dueling releases from the Republican and Democratic leaders of the state Assembly addressed the election audit that Speaker Robin Vos assured former President Donald Trump, who lost the 2020 election, he would perform while riding on Trump’s plane to a rally on Saturday.

The so-called audit is part of the project for which Vos hired former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman: to investigate the Wisconsin vote in that election. The Wisconsin election has already been proven in courts, two recounts, machine audits and committee investigations to be fair and accurate. Additionally, Republicans have asked the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau to do another audit that is still underway.

Vos’ release Wednesday said nothing he has not already said multiple times, other than to point out that it was being put out by the entire Assembly GOP, not just his office.

“Assembly Republicans have been working with Justice Gableman to conduct a swift, complete and thorough investigation,” the release on behalf of all the Republican members of the Assembly stated. “Part of our discussion has been focused on hiring independent contractors to enhance our efforts. We believe a cyber-forensic audit is necessary to ensure issues did not happen in 2020. We have allocated additional resources to Justice Gableman to ensure this investigation gets to the truth.”

Nirvana sued by man who was nude baby on 'Nevermind' cover

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 30-year-old man who appeared nude at 4 months old in 1991 on the cover of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” album is suing the band and others, alleging the image is child pornography they have profited from.

The lawsuit, filed by Spencer Elden on Tuesday in federal court in California, alleges that Nirvana and the record labels behind “Nevermind” “intentionally commercially marketed Spencer’s child pornography and leveraged the shocking nature of his image to promote themselves and their music at his expense.”

The lawsuit says Elden has suffered “lifelong damages" from the ubiquitous image of him naked underwater appearing to swim after a dollar bill on a fish hook.

It seeks at least $150,000 from each of more than a dozen defendants, including the Kurt Cobain estate, surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl and Geffen Records.

Arkansas hits new high for ventilator use

LITTLE ROCK — The number of Arkansas COVID-19 patients on ventilators reached another high Wednesday as a hospital urged the postponement of a motorcycle rally expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to the state's northwest next month.

The Department of Health said 354 coronavirus patients were on ventilators, surpassing the previous high set Monday. There are 1,368 COVID-19 patients in Arkansas hospitals, with 534 in ICUs.

Coronavirus patients make up nearly half of the state's ICU beds. There are four hospitals in the state with ICU beds for coronavirus patients, according to the state's system for coordinating COVID-19 patients. The state on Tuesday ran out of ICU beds for virus patients for the first time since the pandemic began.

Overall, the state reported 27 ICU beds available, though it was not clear how many were equipped for ICU patients.

Arkansas on Wednesday reported 2,781 new virus cases and 25 new COVID-19 deaths. The state reported more than 12,000 new doses of the coronavirus vaccine were given.

Hearing on hold for man who put feet on Pelosi's desk

LITTLE ROCK — Attorneys have agreed to a three-month delay in the case against an Arkansas man who sat with his feet on a desk in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office during the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot.

In a teleconference Tuesday in federal court in the District of Columbia, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary L. Dohrmann asked for the extension, saying prosecutors are busy with many cases stemming from the breach of the Capitol that day.

Richard Barnett, 61, was among supporters of President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol as lawmakers assembled to certify Joe Biden's victory over Trump. Prosecutors say Barnett was carrying a stun gun when he entered the building.

Barnett's attorney, Joseph McBride, told the judge he agreed with the extension because his client is at home in Arkansas and no longer in jail. Barnett was incarcerated from Jan. 8 to April 27, first in Fayetteville and later in Washington, D.C., according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Hospitals closing off-site ERs to buttress central ER staffs

(AP) — Texas hospital systems are increasingly closing temporarily their off-site emergency rooms and sending their staff to their hospitals to support staff overstretched by COVID-19. The moves came as the coronavirus continues to rage throughout the state.

Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston closed three suburban emergency rooms Monday in Kingwood, Spring and Sienna to help ease the burden on its hospital staffs, it said in a statement.

“Closing these locations allows us to reassign the staff to other Memorial Hermann locations where their help is critically needed,” the Memorial Hermann statement said.

St. Luke’s Health in Houston has closed its Conroe ER to help meet surging admissions at its hospital in nearby The Woodlands.

Texas Health Hospital Rockwall, near Dallas, has closed its free-standing ER to help its hospital ER. An air-conditioned tent also has been erected outside the hospital to accommodate 10-15 overflow patients, according to a hospital statement.
