A very sad note just appeared on the website for Levon Helm, the drummer-singer of the Band. "Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer," says the note. "Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey. Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration...he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage."

Secret Service Scandal Investigation Involves Brother Of GOP Senate Candidate
Source: Huffington Post
Former agent and current Maryland Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Dan Bongino spoke out Monday about his former colleagues at the currently scandal-plagued U.S. Secret Service. The agency is facing scrutiny over allegations that agents brought prostitutes back to their Colombia hotel during the president's visit to the country last week.
The Secret Service announced later Monday that it had pulled the top security clearance of 11 agents and uniformed division personnel over the incident.
Bongino said Monday on NBC's "Nightly News With Brian Williams" that the scandal "was devastating to me along with the fraternity of Secret Service brothers out there."
Bongino went on to call the incident "a national embarrassment."
But the GOP senate candidate concluded on a more sympathetic note. "I know everyone in the case," he said. "I'm not apologizing for anybody's behavior ... But lives are changed permanently. The ones I've talked to -- their families are just beaten up by this."

Source: Fuel Fix
Federal officials are investigating reports of a light oil sheen in the central portion of the Gulf of Mexico.
Shell Oil reported the light sheen to the governments National Response Center Wednesday, but said in a statement that the company had no current indication that it originates from the firms nearby wells. The source of the sheen is unclear.
The sheen is located between two existing oil production sites the Mars and Ursa projects about 130 miles southeast of New Orleans. Shell operates both projects, but BP has a working interest in the Mars field. BP, Exxon Mobil Corp., and ConocoPhillips each have working interests in the Ursa project.
Shell said in its statement that it has mobilized an oil spill skimming ship the Marine Spill Response Corp.s Louisiana Responder out of prudent caution.

Raleigh student asks Gingrich to 'Newt-er' Obama
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A student at Raleigh's Broughton High School used a play on Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's name to make a request Monday.
Gingrich was speaking to an auditorium full of students during a campaign stop and was taking questions when it happened.
A student at the back stood up and told Gingrich "I'm a big fan of you" and that President Obama is running an "unsustainable economy."
He then asked: "I was wondering if you could do us all a favor and Newt-er Obama?"

Donald Rumsfeld Fundraising For Candidate Accused Of War Crimes
Ilario Pantano became a conservative cause celebre after he survived war crimes charges in Iraq stemming from his shooting of unarmed Iraqi prisoners. He parlayed his story into a book and then a highly competitive, but unsuccessful, run for Congress in 2010 in North Carolina against Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-NC). Pantano is running again in 2012 and has a powerful ally fundraising for him this month in Washington: former Defense Secretry Donald Rumsfeld.
There is no greater honor than to have received the encouragement of the former Secretary of Defense. We are humbled that Secretary Rumsfeld would make the time and the effort to single out our race for support, Pantano said in a statement, per Politico.

The New Jack Bauer Republicans
Call them the Jack Bauer Republicans.
Two Iraq veterans who left the military after surviving charges of crimes against detainees are running credible campaigns for Congress. And far from minimizing the incidents, both candidates have put the accusations front and center in their campaigns, attracting rock-star adulation from conservatives nationwide in the process. But critics, including human-rights activists, veterans, and now even defeated primary opponents, warn that their records should disqualify them from office.
Last week, Ilario Pantano won the Republican nomination in North Carolinas 7th District, setting up a challenge to incumbent Democrat Rep. Mike McIntyre in November. In 2001, immediately following the 9/11 terror attacks, Pantano, a veteran who had previously fought in the Gulf War, left his career as a successful producer and media consultant in his native Manhattan to rejoin the Marines and was eventually deployed to Iraq. In April 2004, Pantano killed two unarmed Iraqi detainees, twice unloading his gun into their bodies and firing between 50 and 60 shots in total. Afterward, he placed a sign over the corpses featuring the Marines' slogan No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy as a message to the local population.

North Carolina gets ready for 'Hunger Games' fans
RALEIGH, N.C. Fans of "The Hunger Games" are already turning up in North Carolina, seeking out places where the movie was shot, from old-growth forests to an abandoned mill town.
And the tourism industry is prepared to cash in on them, with everything from hotel packages and zip lines tours, to re-enactments of scenes from the film and lessons in survival skills.
The movie, which opens this weekend and is expected to be a box office smash, is based on a best-selling book about a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers compete to the death in fighting games.
It was filmed entirely in North Carolina, from the mountains, where fake trees were planted, filled with propane and blown up, to Charlotte, which served as the Capitol from the story the seat of power where the teens are sent for training.
Also prominently featured in the movie is the Henry River Mill Village near Hildebran, about 70 miles from Asheville, which was the setting for District 12, home of the three main characters, Katniss, Peeta and Gale.

Conservative blogger posts Obama photo in chains with fried chicken
Source: CBS-WRAL affiliate
A blogger for conservative NC think tank The John Locke Foundation is being asked to explain why she illustrated a story on President Obama's position on North Carolina's proposed marriage amendment with an altered image of Obama in chains and high heels with a bucket of fried chicken.
On Monday, "Meck Deck" blogger Tara Servatius posted a story stating that the president took a public position against the amendment to boost his chances of winning North Carolina in November. Accompanying the story was an image of the presidents face Photoshopped onto an African-American man wearing high heels and chains. Between the man's legs is a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Update: Servatius has since resigned.
The story didnt come to our attention till Wednesday evening, when liberal-leaning bloggers began tweeting links to it. Within an hour, the photo was removed from the story, though at the time of this post, it was still available on the think tanks servers.

Obama opposes NC marriage amendment proposal
Source: WRAL
RALEIGH, N.C. President Barack Obama is speaking out against an amendment on the May ballot that would define marriage in North Carolina as being between one man and one woman.
The Obama campaign issued a statement Friday, calling the proposed amendment discriminatory.
While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the president has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples," campaign spokesman Cameron French said in the statement. "Thats what the North Carolina ballot initiative would do it would single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples and thats why the president does not support it.
Although North Carolina law prohibits same-sex couples from marrying, it is the only state in the Southeast without such restrictions written into its constitution.
