When the press accuses a new father of being “MIA” for going on parental leave to bond with a child, it sends exactly the wrong message to working families.

Can Pete Buttigieg have it all?

PETE BUTTIGIEG has been MIA.

While U.S. ports faced anchor-to-anchor traffic and Congress nearly melted down over the president’s infrastructure bill in recent weeks, the usually omnipresent Transportation secretary was lying low.

One of the White House’s go-to communicators didn’t appear on TV. He was absent on Capitol Hill during the negotiations over the bill he had been previously helping sell to different members of Congress. Conservative critics tried (unsuccessfully) to get #WheresPete to trend and Fox News ran a story on October 4 with the headline: “Buttigieg quiet on growing port congestion as shipping concerns build ahead of holidays.”

They didn’t previously announce it, but Buttigieg’s office told West Wing Playbook that the secretary has actually been on paid leave since mid-August to spend time with his husband, Chasten, and their two newborn babies.

.......................

Buttigieg’s time away to help care for his children is the latest example of paid leave for new parents becoming more common in the United States, even at the highest levels of government.

Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget SHALANDA YOUNG is pregnant and is planning to take “time away from the office to be with her daughter after she’s born in the next few weeks,” according to an OMB spokesperson. Sen. TAMMY DUCKWORTH (D-Ill.), the first senator ever to give birth in office, took 12 weeks maternity leave when her daughter was born in 2018, though she famously appeared on the Senate floor with the newborn to cast a vote.

Gableman cancels another interview as he conducts his review of the 2020 election for Republicans

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Updated 6:08 p.m. Oct. 14, 2021

MADISON — The former state Supreme Court justice overseeing a Republican review of the 2020 election has pulled back for now on another interview.

The disclosure Thursday offered the latest sign that former Justice Michael Gableman's review is moving slower than Republican lawmakers wanted.

The announcement that Gableman had put off the interview came three days after Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul announced he considered Gableman's plans for the interview unlawful.

......................

.......................

................Gableman contended last year without providing evidence that the election was stolen. More recently, he said he doesn't understand how elections work.

Gableman has said his review is not meant to overturn the election results but help guide legislators as they consider voting legislation.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, a Republican from Rochester, has given Gableman a taxpayer-funded budget of $676,000. Gableman was supposed to be done with his work this month but has recently said it will take longer.

WAUKESHA, Wis. — A parent has sued a southeastern Wisconsin school district after her son contracted Covid-19 from a classmate.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Shannon Jensen filed the lawsuit in federal court against the Waukesha School District and school board on Oct. 5. Jensen is seeking an injunction ordering the district to comply with U.S. Centers for Disease Control Covid-19 guidelines.

According to the lawsuit, the board in May removed a student mask requirement and other Covid-19 mitigation measures. One of Jensen’s son’s classmates allegedly came to school with symptoms in September and didn’t wear a mask. Jensen’s son was seated next to the sick student and was wearing a mask but still became infected. Jensen’s other two sons later tested positive as well.

In an email to the Journal Sentinel, Waukesha School District Superintendent James Sebert declined to discuss the lawsuit.

Anti-Trump Republicans to back vulnerable Democratic lawmakers in 2022 congressional races

Source: Reuters

October 14, 20216:53 AMUpdated 2 hours ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A group of anti-Trump Republicans on Thursday will endorse a slate of Democratic lawmakers facing tough races in next year’s midterm elections, in a bid to stop the Republican Party from retaking control of Congress.

The officials, dismayed that most elected Republicans now embrace former President Donald Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, told Reuters they are also backing vulnerable Republicans, including Representative Liz Cheney, who have rejected Trump’s voter fraud allegations.

The Renew America Movement (RAM), formed by centrist Republicans after a mob of Trump supporters stormed Congress on Jan. 6 to try to stop lawmakers from certifying Democratic President Joe Biden’s election victory, concedes that Trump and his conspiracy theories now have an iron grip on the party.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll from August, 30% of U.S. adults agreed that the “2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.” That included 61% of Republicans, 19% of independents and 10% of Democrats................

'Huge problem': Passengers are bringing a record number of guns to the airport, TSA says

(CNN)Airline passengers are bringing guns to the airport in numbers never seen before, and it is a "huge problem," the Transportation Security Administration chief told CNN.

Security and law enforcement officials are at the same time dealing with an unprecedented surge in belligerent passengers who are straining the systems designed to keep air travel safe.
.....................................

TSA reports catching 4,650 firearms at checkpoints in the first 10 months of the year -- a majority of which were loaded. That number surpasses the full-year record of 4,432, set in 2019.

Those unruly passengers are also at previously unseen levels.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that airline crews have reported 4,724 incidents this year, including 98 in the last week. It has opened more than 880 investigations; in a typical year, it conducts about 180 investigations.
The penalties for attempting to bring a firearm through a checkpoint start at about $2,500 for an unloaded weapon and range up to $10,000 for a loaded weapon. Penalties are higher for subsequent offenses, although Pekoske said they rarely see repeat offenders. The agency can also revoke PreCheck membership, local authorities may criminally prosecute, and in the Pittsburgh area, TSA says a sheriff's department has agreed to revoke concealed carry permits for individuals who try to bring a gun through a checkpoint. ..........................

White House formally rejects Trump's request to protect specific documents from being given to January 6 investigators

Updated 6:48 PM ET, Wed October 13, 2021

(CNN)The White House formally rejected the latest request by former President Donald Trump to assert executive privilege to shield from lawmakers a subset of documents that has been requested by the House committee investigating January 6, and set an aggressive timeline for their release.

The latest letter came after the Biden administration informed the National Archives on Friday that it would not assert executive privilege over a tranche of documents related to January 6 from the Trump White House. When the White House sent its first letter last week, the former President had not formally submitted his objections yet. The latest response from the White House counsel is more of a technicality in response to the request from Trump regarding the subset of documents, according to a person familiar, reaffirming the decision already made by President Joe Biden not to assert executive privilege.

The letter sent Friday, and released on Wednesday, from White House counsel Dana Remus to Archivist of the United States David Ferriero requests that the documents be released "30 days after your notification to the former President, absent any intervening court order."

After that decision was reported, Trump wrote to the National Archives, objecting to the release of certain documents to the committee on the grounds of executive privilege.

In the letter released Wednesday, Remus wrote: "President Biden has considered the former President's assertion, and I have engaged in additional consultations with the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice. For the same reasons described in [sic] earlier letter, the President maintains his conclusion that an assertion of executive privilege is not in the best interests of the United States, and therefore is not justified as to any of the documents provided to the White House on September 8, 2021."

"Accordingly, President Biden does not uphold the former President's assertion of privilege.".........................................................................

Texas florist becomes 100th US Capitol rioter to plead guilty

Texas woman charged in riot asks judge to approve Mexico trip 02:40

(CNN)A Texas florist became the 100th person to plead guilty in connection with the January 6 insurrection, a landmark moment more than nine months after the deadly attack on the US Capitol.

Jenny Cudd, 37, pleaded guilty Wednesday to entering a restricted building, namely the Capitol. Cudd could face up to one year in jail, though the federal guidelines call for zero to six months. Capitol rioters with similar cases have received probation or a few weeks behind bars.

The facts of her case are routine, but she went viral in February after she asked a judge for permission to attend a four-day work retreat near Cancun, Mexico. District Judge Trevor McFadden approved her request, citing the fact that prosecutors didn't have any opposition.

Federal prosecutors say Cudd is unrepentant, citing a Facebook video in which she said, "F--- yes, I am proud of my actions, I f---ing charged the Capitol today with patriots today. Hell, yes, I am proud of my actions," according to court records, and a local news interview in which she said: "I would absolutely do it again." The Justice Department has used comments like these to push for harsher sentences, and some judges have cited rioters' defiance in sending them to jail. Sentencing is set for March 11.

Republicans rally around possible Trump 2024 bid as they downplay his role on January 6

Source: CNN

Updated 8:12 AM ET, Wed October 13, 2021

(CNN)Nine months after the attack on the US Capitol, Republicans in Congress are defending Donald Trump's role on January 6 in some of their strongest terms yet -- and signaling he'd have widespread backing from the party if he ran for president again in 2024.
Republicans from across the conference -- including some who are vulnerable in next year's midterms or have long been seen as part of the establishment wing of the party -- are expressing little to no reservations about the prospect of Trump topping the ticket again, even as he continues to spread the same election lies that led a mob to storm their place of work. Some GOP members are cheering on a Trump comeback, saying he remains a popular figure and powerful force in the party. And there's widespread agreement among Republicans that Trump would be the automatic frontrunner -- and freeze the primary field -- if he chooses to jump in.
Even some Republicans in swing districts -- like Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey -- are embracing Trump's potential return into the political fray.

"Yes, I would," Van Drew, who switched parties and became a Republican in 2019 to defend Trump during his first impeachment proceedings, said when asked if he would back the ex-President if he ran again in 2024. ...............................
