Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) reiterated their support Tuesday for William Barr after the attorney general was heavily criticized over the Justice Department’s handling of Roger Stone’s criminal case.

In a joint statement, McConnell, McCarthy and Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called Barr a “man of the highest character and unquestionable integrity” and highlighted his previous Senate confirmations.

“Suggestions from outside groups that the Attorney General has fallen short of the responsibilities of his office are unfounded,” the lawmakers said. “The Attorney General has shown that he is committed without qualification to securing equal justice under law for all Americans. … The nation is fortunate that President Trump chose such a strong and selfless public servant to lead the Department of Justice.”

Democrats and outside groups attacked Barr last week after the Justice Department revised a sentencing recommendation for Stone, after a tweet from Trump declaring that the initial sentencing recommendation of seven-to-nine years was “horrible and very unfair.” The Justice Department maintains that the agency planned to adjust Stone’s sentencing recommendation before Trump’s tweet. The new recommendation, however, prompted the four career prosecutors assigned to the case to withdraw from the case. .....................

Two people are in police custody and one is sought after a bag with a high-powered gun and a Bible listing U.S. cities was found at the Greektown Casino-Hotel.

About 11 p.m. Monday, three suspects checked into the hotel, at 555 E. Lafayette St., said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

Then, about 7 a.m. Tuesday, a fire alarm went off in the hotel, he said. As hotel staff searched the floors, they found the bag tucked behind an ice machine, Craig said.

It contained a Draco AK-47 with a 30-round magazine and a Bible, he said.

The Bible had writings in it referencing multiple U.S. cities, Craig said. Detroit was not listed, but some on the list were cities where mass shootings have taken place, he said..................................................

Susan Collins faces competitive Senate race, poll indicates

Source: axios

22 mins ago - Politics & Policy

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is up against a competitive challenge for her seat for the first time since 1996, according to a Colby College poll, which shows her in a statistical tie with her expected Democratic opponent.

Why it matters: As one of the most centrist Republicans in the Senate throughout Trump's presidency, Collins has served as a pivotal swing vote on a number of key issues.

She voted to confirm controversial U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, and more recently she voted to acquit Trump in the impeachment trial.

Details: 43% of those polled indicated they would vote for Maine's House Speaker Sara Gideon in the November election, compared to the 42% who supported Collins.

49% of respondents in the poll agreed with Collins' decision to acquit Trump, compared to 50% who did not. 39% of independents polled said the decision made them less likely to vote for Collins; 13% said it made them more likely to do so.........................................

Democrats launch $10M campaign bashing Trump in 3 key swing states

Source: politico

The ads will run in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Trump carried the three states by a combined 78,000 votes out of 14 million cast in 2016, and American Bridge has focused its 2020 spending on chipping away at the president’s support among white working-class voters in the states. Given how close the states were four years ago, any erosion in the margins among key demographic groups — even ones that still give Trump their overwhelming support — could tip one of the battlegrounds in 2020.

“We don't have to win all of these voters back. We don't even have to win a majority of these voters back,” Sacha Haworth, the organization’s political director, said in an interview with POLITICO. “We just need to be able to peel off enough of his supporters within this swath of voters to deny him the White House in 2020.”

..................

American Bridge’s new ad campaign, which will later expand to include a separate digital component, follows anti-Trump spending the group did at the end of 2019. After that campaign, the group studied voters in the states for clues about how their ads affected Trump’s poll numbers.

A study conducted by BlueLabs Analytics for American Bridge, which was reviewed by POLITICO, maintains that an earlier advertising campaign in Wisconsin at the end of 2019 eroded some of the president’s support among so-called likely Trump Defectors voters who backed the president in 2016 but aren’t planning on doing so again. The results were especially pronounced among women.

“In markets where American Bridge ran TV ads, the generic Democrat gained 3 points of support with the voters we tested,” the study read. “This was especially true among women, who grew more supportive of the generic Democrat compared to men in targeted markets, who stayed at the same level of support for the President. The opposite was the case in non-targeted markets. In these markets, Trump actually slightly increased support overall — particularly with men.”......................

Interesting article. It has a brief discussion about the type of advertising and how it might work.

The NY Times tells us of the Trumpian dark towers of debt and its many crimes ranging from money laundering to tax fraud. SCOTUS will be weighing in on Trump’s finances in time to make a difference in the 2020 election. David Enrich’s writing finally emerges to show the dirty details where Russian bank VTB underwrote the Deutsche Bank loans to Trump (and Kushner). Enrich’s story is entwined with the stories of dead bankers as well as the converging story of how money-laundering of the Trump-type is a feature of cronyism’s financial affairs.

A new report from The New York Times' David Enrich highlights dubious dealmaking and questionable partnerships between President Donald Trump and Deutsche Bank.
While numerous banks viewed Trump's past bankruptcies as a sign to steer clear of the real-estate mogul, Deutsche Bank used him and his businesses to rapidly ascend the financial sector.
The Times report details how Deutsche Bank gave Trump special treatment over several years and how the millionaire leveraged the partnership to secure unorthodox credit lines.
Here are the five biggest bombshells from the report, from Trump flying bankers in his private jet to the bank holding years of hidden tax returns.

The Times' finance editor, David Enrich spent the past two years interviewing Deutsche Bank executives about the firm's relationship with Trump, gleaning a mix of revealing anecdotes and riveting details indicating how some employees viewed Trump as a boon for the growing company while others looked back on their business with the real-estate mogul with "a mixture of anger and regret."

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Acting Secretary Chad Wolf said on Tuesday that SWAT-like teams would not be needed to back up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) efforts in so-called sanctuary cities if local officials there would help with immigration enforcement.

“What we found in these sanctuary jurisdictions is that local law enforcement does not work with the department,” Wolf told Fox News’s “Fox & Friends.”

“So what used to take one or two officers going into a jail setting and picking up an individual that's on a final order of removal, we now have to go into communities with many, many officers.”

...........................................

“Again, in these sanctuary cities, they provide no resources to help us do our mission,” he said. “Should they decide to honor detainers and help ICE, we would not have to call in these additional resources.”

.................
President Trump and administration officials condemned these cities, with Trump pledging in his State of the Union address to combat them. .................................
