In battlegrounds, absentee ballot rejections could triple

Source: AP

By CHRISTINA A. CASSIDY and FRANK BAJAK 2 hours ago

ATLANTA (AP) — Thousands of absentee ballots get rejected in every presidential election. This year, that problem could be much worse and potentially pivotal in hotly contested battleground states.

With the coronavirus creating a surge in mail-in balloting and postal delays reported across the country, the number of rejected ballots in November is projected to be significantly higher than previous elections.

If ballots are rejected at the same rate as during this year’s primaries, up to three times as many voters in November could be disenfranchised in key battleground states when compared to the last presidential election, according to an Associated Press analysis of rejected ballots. It could be even more pronounced in some urban areas where Democratic votes are concentrated and ballot rejection rates trended higher during this year’s primaries.

“It is the number one thing that keeps me up at night — the idea that voters will do everything they can to ensure their ballot is returned on time and the system will still fail them,” said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Ballot rejections occur even under the best of circumstances. They go uncounted because they arrived too late in the mail, voters forgot to sign them or signatures didn’t match the one on file at local election offices.............................

In every U.S. presidential election, thousands of ballots are rejected and never counted. They may have arrived after Election Day or were missing a voter's signature. That number will be far higher this year as the coronavirus pandemic forces tens of millions of Americans to vote by mail for the first time. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, File)

The commissioner of the IRS—who is responsible for releasing President Trump's tax returns to Congress—owns two rental properties at the Trump International Waikiki that he profits off of while in office, according to new documents obtained by a watchdog group in Washington, raising new questions about his withholding of Trump’s tax returns as the president goes to court to keep them hidden.
IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig

Commissioner Charles Rettig’s personal financial disclosures for the past two years, analyzed by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, show that the IRS commissioner earns $100,000-200,000 per year from his properties at the Trump-branded Hawaii resort, which he purchased in 2006 before the hotel officially opened.

The Trump Waikiki website notes that the hotel was not developed by the Trump Organization—the owner licenses the Trump brand name—but Hawaii News Now reported in 2016 that the now-president received 10% of all pre-sales of units at the property, and Trump has made a promotional visit to the hotel while in office.

Rettig, who failed to disclose his connection to the Trump property when first appointed, told House lawmakers in 2019 that it was ultimately his decision—under the supervision of Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin—whether or not to turn over Trump’s federal tax returns to Congress, as House Democrats have requested.

Source: the daily beast

Published Sep. 07, 2020 8:11AM ET

A leading opposition figure in Belarus was snatched off the street by unidentified masked men and bundled into a minivan on Monday, according to her campaign. Maria Kolesnikova was one of three women who joined forces to challenge the incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko in last month’s disputed election. Kolesnikova is the only one of the three campaign partners who hasn’t fled Belarus. On Monday, her campaign team said she was seized and bundled into a minivan which was marked “Communications.” Police in the capital city of Minsk have not yet commented on the reports. The detention came a day after hundreds of people were arrested following a fourth consecutive weekend of protests against Lukashenko. ..........................

Schumer calls for investigation into reports of campaign finance improprieties by DeJoy's former company

By John Bowden - 09/06/20 10:05 PM EDT

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) called on North Carolina's attorney general to open an investigation into the postmaster general, Louis DeJoy, over claims made by five former employees of DeJoy's former company alleging that he reimbursed employees with company funds for donating to GOP candidates.

In a tweet Sunday evening, the Senate's top Democrat said that the allegations raised in a report from The Washington Post earlier Sunday required investigation by officials independent of the U.S. Justice Department in Washington D.C.

"These are very serious allegations that must be investigated immediately, independent of the Trump Justice Department," said Schumer in the tweet. "North Carolina’s Attorney General—an elected official who is independent of Donald Trump—is the right person to start this investigation.".......................

His remarks came after a former human resources manager, among others, told the Post that DeJoy had violated federal law earlier in his career by pressuring employees of his company to make donations to Republican candidates before reimbursing them with company funds. A spokesperson for DeJoy has denied that he ever sought to improperly pressure employees, and did not address allegations that he reimbursed employees...............................

................The Post analyzed federal and state campaign finance records and found 124 New Breed employees donated more than $1 million to federal and state GOP candidates between 2000 and 2014. Nine employees donated a combined $700 to Democratic candidates during the same period, according to the Post.

While encouraging donations is not necessarily illegal, reimbursing campaign contributions is a violation of federal and state election laws. The federal law has a five-year statute of limitations, but there is no statute of limitations for the state law...

Where do they find these people? Appointed by the president as Cabinet members, many have past lives and records that should immediately disqualify thems for any high office.

Someone who has not been given the attention he so richly deserves is Steven Mnuchin, the new secretary of the Treasury.

Only one Democratic senator voted for him: Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Every other Democratic senator voted a resounding "no."

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said the following of Mnuchin: "His complicity in the 2008 financial crisis raises serious doubts."

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) went further: "He was part of the cadre of corporate raiders that brought our economy to its knees."

Of the astute businessman's failure to disclose $100 million in an overseas tax haven, Menendez added:
"One does not go and create offshore entities at the end of the day other than to avoid, in some form or fashion, the tax laws of the United States. That's pretty simple."

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) did not hesitate to call Mnuchin "greedy" and "unethical." She backed it up with these blunt words: "Whether illegally foreclosing on thousands of families, skirting the law with offshore tax havens or helping design tactics that contributed to the 2008 financial crisis, Steve Mnuchin made a career — and millions of dollars — pioneering increasingly deceptive and predatory ways to rob hardworking Americans of their savings and homes."..............................

While Trump Was Golfing, His Campaign Attacked Joe Biden For Visiting Cemetery

Source: huff post

09/07/2020 12:38 am ET

Trump campaign official ripped on Twitter for mocking Biden’s visit to the graves of family members after church on Sunday.

President Donald Trump’s campaign is coming under criticism after mocking former Vice President Joe Biden for “meandering” through a cemetery, where he was visiting the graves of his late son, Beau Biden, as well as first wife Neilia Biden and daughter Naomi Biden.

Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015; Neilia and Naomi Biden were killed in an automotive accident in 1972.

Francis Brennan, the Trump campaign’s director of strategic response, tweeted:
