PARIS — The French call it “the past that will not pass.” . . . When voters go to the polls Sunday, they will choose between warring interpretations of France’s past as much as between different visions for its future.

For Le Pen — the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, a convicted Holocaust denier who repeatedly has dismissed the Nazi gas chambers as a “detail of history” — the past is nothing to be ashamed of. Last month, she remarked on national television that France bore no responsibility for an infamous Paris roundup during the Holocaust, when French authorities arrested some 13,000 Jews, soon deported to their deaths.
Approximately 76,000 Jews were deported from France to the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Most never returned.
“If there were those responsible,” Le Pen said, “it was those who were in power at the time. This is not France.”

In one of Macron’s most controversial decisions on the campaign trial, he went in February to Algeria, which France had annexed for 132 years, and called on the French state to apologize formally for its crimes as a colonial power, especially in the bloody war for Algerian independence between 1954 and 1962. France’s history in that war, Macron said in an interview days later, represented “crimes and acts of barbarism” that today deserve to be labeled “crimes against humanity.”
For months, Le Pen has harped on Macron for those three words, accusing him once again in a televised debate Wednesday of “insulting” the French people.
In a high-profile case, her father, in the 2002 presidential campaign, was accused of torture during the Algerian War — charges that the elder Le Pen vehemently disputes.

If 50 senators (plus Vice President Mike Pence, who breaks ties) vote for a bill anything like the House bill, it would do great damage to the country. It would harm people who suffer from a wide range of health conditions, including birth defects, cancer, diabetes and just about every other disease — including many people who are perfectly healthy today but could one day fall sick. The bill would also transfer billions of dollars from the poor and the middle class to the wealthy, who are doing just fine already, thank you.

A deux mois du premier tour de la présidentielle en France, pendant que François Fillon et Marine Le Pen sont soupçonnés d'emplois fictifs et qu'Emmanuel Macron a passé le week-end à s'expliquer sur la colonisation en Algérie, l'alliance de la gauche a du plomb dans l'aile. Si le courant passe bien entre le candidat socialiste Benoît Hamon et l'écologiste Yannick Jadot, le dialogue semble avoir tourné court avec Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
« Il nous fait des simagrées pendant trois semaines pour qu'on l'appelle, avant de tout faire capoter. » Pour ce lieutenant de Benoît Hamon, il ne faut pas être dupe, Jean-Luc Mélenchon n'a jamais vraiment voulu d'un accord, à moins d’être certain d’être le candidat de la gauche plurielle à l’élection présidentielle.
Vendredi 17 février, Jean-Luc Mélenchon a donné le premier coup de griffe en affirmant publiquement qu'il n'avait « pas l'intention de s'accrocher à un corbillard », en parlant du Parti socialiste.
Avec les Verts, l'accord est en bonne voie
Réponse samedi du candidat PS : « Je ne courrai pas après lui, je ne cours après personne, je n'oblige personne », a prévenu Benoît Hamon en ajoutant qu'il « était le mieux placé pour faire gagner la gauche ». Il est en effet crédité de 14 % d'intentions de vote dans les sondages, devant Jean-Luc Mélenchon. L'ambiance s'annonce donc glaciale entre Mélenchon et Hamon qui devraient se rencontrer en fin de semaine prochaine.
Avec Yannick Jadot, l'atmosphère est plus chaleureuse. Un accord est proche. « La maison est achetée, on en est aux finitions », indique l'entourage du candidat socialiste avant de préciser : « Il faut juste que les Verts atterrissent un peu, on ne reprendra pas tout leur programme. » Il reste aussi à négocier des places aux législatives. Une fois l'accord validé par les sympathisants écolos, Yannick Jadot pourra retirer sa candidature.

Le plus célèbre monument parisien, la tour Eiffel, va bientôt changer d’allure. Face à la menace terroriste, la grande dame de fer doit être plus sécurisée. Depuis les festivités de l’Euro 2012 déjà, une clôture provisoire entourait le parvis du monument.
Le provisoire va finalement virer au… permanent. Les barrières installées depuis le mois de juin assez peu esthétiques vont être remplacées dans le courant de l’automne par un mur de verre. « Une clôture antiballes qui englobera l’essentiel des jardins de la tour Eiffel », a indiqué Bernard Gaudillère, président de la Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel aux élus siégeant au Conseil de Paris. Une « clôture de sécurité » qui devrait coûter 20 M€ et s’élever, selon nos informations, à 2 m50 de haut.

Emergency Declared after Tornado Kills 4 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Storms Leave Damage in Alabama

Severe storms and at least one tornado tore through the South on Saturday, killing four in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and ripping the roof of a Wal-Mart in Warner Robins, Georgia. There were also reports of flooding and power outages in Alabama.
On Saturday afternoon, Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict announced the identities of the four victims: Earnest Perkins, 58; Cleveland Madison, 20; David Wayne McCoy, 47 and Simona Cox, 72.
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency during a Saturday afternoon press conference.

C'est la proposition choc de Benoît Hamon : le revenu universel. Un revenu qui serait versé à tous, sans condition de ressources, dès 18 ans. 600 euros dès 2018 puis 750 euros dans une seconde étape. Pour le candidat socialiste, c'est une réponse à l'évolution du monde du travail dans les années à venir.

Trop coûteuse pour Manuel Valls, l'ancien Premier ministre propose lui, ce qu'il appelle un "revenu décent", d'environ 800 euros et réservé uniquement aux plus modestes. Arnaud Montebourg, qui milite lui pour une société du travail et pour une revalorisation des bas salaires, juge irréalisable la proposition de Benoît Hamon.
