Renowned coach Parcells enters Hall of Fame

Congratulations Bill:

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Bill Parcells mastered the franchise turnaround so well that he has become the latest coach to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A Super Bowl winner in the 1986 and 1990 seasons with the Giants, Parcells also took the Patriots from the bottom of the NFL to a Super Bowl, losing to Green Bay. He guided the Jets from 1-15 the season before he took over to 9-7 and then a 12-4 record and a loss in the AFC title game in 1998.

He also helped the Cowboys regain some of their glory from 2003-06, becoming the first coach to lead four franchises to the playoffs.

Parcells, presented Saturday night by former Giants defensive end George Martin, becomes the first coach since John Madden in 2006 to make the hall. His career record was 183-138-1 and he won Coach of the Year honors in 1986 and 1994.

U.S. expected to say accused Fort Hood shooter carefully planned attack

(Reuters) - Prosecutors may argue on Tuesday that Major Nidal Hasan researched radical Islam topics and terms such as "jihad" on the Internet before carrying out the worst non-combat attack in history on a U.S. military base, killing 13 unarmed soldiers in 2009, military officials said.

After nearly four years of legal delays, prosecutors will lay out their case against Hasan in opening statements at his military court martial on the base where he is accused of the attack on November 5, 2009.

Hasan, 42, an American-born Muslim, is charged with killing 13 soldiers and injuring 32 civilian workers in the rampage, only days before he was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan.

A military jury of nine colonels, three lieutenant colonels and one major will consider evidence in the case.

Hasan was shot and critically wounded to end the massacre. He is confined to a wheel chair.

He admitted at an earlier court hearing that his actions were taken to protect Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan from U.S. assaults. The base near Killeen, Texas, is a major center for soldiers deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.

I was on base the day this happened. The worst attack on a base on American soil since Pearl Harbor. This man needs to rot in hell for what he did, and I hope they show no mercy.

Diamonds ensure Mugabe is forever

This makes U.S. elections look clean:

THE president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, used $850m of diamond money to rig the country's elections, intelligence documents obtained by The Sunday Times reveal.

The documents, dated June 3, detail how Chinese and Zimbabwean diamond companies pumped cash into a war chest used by Mugabe to manipulate the results of the election and intimidate the population.

As Zimbabweans prepared for another five years of autocratic rule after the country's electoral commission announced that Mugabe had won the presidential elections with 61 per cent of the vote.

The classified documents reveal how Mugabe's Zanu-PF party received $800m from two diamond mining companies controlled by Chinese investors and senior military commanders in the Zimbabwean army, police and intelligence services. Joseph Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, allegedly gave $85m and the government of Equatorial Guinea gave $92m to the slush fund.

Boardwalk crash: Driver was 'moving purposefully,' witnesses say

A driver who witnesses described as "moving purposefully" struck a dozen people on the Venice boardwalk early Saturday evening.

Two of the pedestrians were injured critically, two were categorized as having "serious" injuries and eight others suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. at the boardwalk's intersection with Dudley Avenue. "The vehicle appeared to be moving purposefully down the boardwalk according to witnesses," said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Humphrey said witnesses described a dark-colored sedan striking the crowd.

"A car plowed through the boardwalk," said a stunned Daniel Regidor, who had been out for a run and was a short distance away when the crash occurred.

He described "people screaming, running."

"I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way ... just a lot of people screaming," Regidor said in a telephone interview. "It was horrible.

"I saw somebody flying up in the air.... When I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied," he said. "Some looked pretty mangled, head injuries, just a lot of blood."

Shrapnel from imploding Calif. power plant sprays crowd, injuring 5, severing leg of 1

Thank goodness no one was killed. i have never heard of such a thing, thought there was enough planning in these things to keep this from happening.

B

AKERSFIELD, Calif. — One man had his leg severed Saturday and four others were also injured as shrapnel from the demolition of a power plant flew into a crowd of more than 1,000 spectators that had gathered in California’s Central Valley to watch it come down, officials said.

The crowd gathered at 6 a.m., some sleeping in their cars overnight, in the nearby parking lot of a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Bakersfield to watch the planned implosion of the steam power plant owned by the public utility Pacific Gas and Electric that had been decommissioned for decades.

After buildings came down in a fiery crash, a police officer heard a man screaming for help and saw that his leg had been blown off.

“It was a piece of shrapnel that came flying out of the explosion and came across and went through a couple of chain link fences,” said police Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe.
