As Brexit looms, UK 'preppers' stock up and hunker down

By JILL LAWLESS today

LONDON (AP) — For almost as long as Britain and the European Union have been wrangling over Brexit, Melvin Burton has been preparing for a bumpy landing.

He’s growing vegetables, drying fruit and buying in bulk. He reels off the cornucopia of cans filling his shed and the cupboard under his stairs: “Tomato sauce, chopped tomatoes, corned beef, tuna, honey, baked beans, tins of ham. Cat food, of course, because I don’t want them to go hungry.”

“I started buying stuff about a year and a half ago,” said the 45-year-old, who lives with his wife and 8-year-old son in a village near Cambridge in eastern England. “No one seemed to be accepting that there was a real problem.”

Plenty of people think there is a problem now.

Turkey says in Patriot missile talks with U.S.

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey and the United States are in talks over Washington’s offer to sell a Patriot missile defense system to Ankara, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday.

“The United States said they could sell Patriots, and the delegations are negotiating”, Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by news agency Anadolu.

Cavusoglu’s comments came after Bloomberg reported that Turkey had rejected a U.S. proposal to deliver a Patriot missile system by the end of the year.

During negotiations, the United States said it could deliver one system earlier, following Turkish objections to the delivery times, Cavusoglu said according to Anadolu. He added the possibility of joint production or a transfer of technology were also important for Ankara.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - Elon Musk’s SpaceX was due to launch an unmanned crew capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket early on Saturday bound for the International Space Station, a major step toward NASA’s goal of reviving the U.S. human spaceflight program this year.

SpaceX’s 16-foot-tall (4.88-meter-) Crew Dragon capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket was set for lift off from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center at 2:49 a.m. (1049 GMT) local time.

The station’s three-member crew is expected to greet the capsule, carrying 400 pounds of supplies and test equipment, early Sunday morning, NASA said. During its five-day stay, U.S. astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques will run tests and inspect Crew Dragon’s cabin.

NASA has awarded SpaceX and Boeing Co $6.8 billion to build competing rocket and capsule systems to launch astronauts into orbit from American soil for the first time since the U.S. Space Shuttle was retired from service in 2011.

Republicans who held 33 hearings on Benghazi complain that Cohen's testimony was a waste of time

Republicans spent much of Wednesday's Oversight Committee hearing wishing they were talking about something more useful -- like Her Emails?

House Republicans spent the past few years — when they were the majority party — eschewing oversight of President Donald Trump and his administration, and instead holding hearings into such topics as social media and campus censorship of Trump supporters. Now that Democrats are in the majority and holding hearings that describe the potential legal jeopardy facing the president, House Republicans are suddenly very upset about wasting time.

The GOP members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform spent much of Wednesday’s hearing with former Trump attorney and fixer Michael Cohen (who also served as the Republican National Committee Deputy Finance Chair) making it clear that they did not want to be there. “This isn’t the reason the people of West Virginia sent me to Congress,” complained Republican Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV), who ran her campaign on a pledge to support President Trump.

Miller said that she was “appalled” that the committee was listening to sworn testimony about alleged felonies committed by a sitting president, when it “could be focused on actual issues that are facing America like border security, neo-natal abstinence syndrome, or improving our nation’s crumbling infrastructure.” She said the committee should instead be holding hearings on child separation — a policy implemented by Trump’s own administration.

Even the Republicans’ oversight committee Twitter account repeated the claim:

"Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV), who ran her campaign on a pledge to support President Trump."

So Miller, you are now a full fledged enabler of aiding and abetting someone that has committed a felony, by providing cover during hearings into your hero's malfeasance, how do explain this to your kids on what is wrong with this picture to what you and everyone in your corrupt party think is right.....................absolutely amazing....................

Did you by chance see ( Rachel Maddow Show---2/28/2019) about a piece of property that your hero inflated for a bank loan in Bedford, NY, to the tune of get ready..........$291,000,000 million dollars and then in his financial disclosure forms he has it listed at 21-50 million, do you think that if someone defrauded the state of New York out of 400 million in tax, by committing a crime on his state and federal tax returns, you think that is just fine and dandy also...................so do you support bank fraud and insurance fraud, that your hero committed...........................keep on whining.......................

The most chilling moment of Michael Cohen's testimony

Trump's former lawyer testified before Congress this week, implicating the president in a litany of alleged crimes.

President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen testified in front of the House Oversight Committee Wednesday, sharing publicly for the first time details about the president’s financial history and involvement in criminal schemes with which Cohen has been charged.

The most chilling moment of the day came near the end of Cohen’s hours-long testimony, as the hearing began to wind down.

“My loyalty to Mr. Trump has cost me everything,” Cohen said. “I will not sit back, say nothing and allow him to do the same to the country.”

He continued, “Given my experience working for Mr. Trump, I fear that if he loses the election in 2020 that there will never be a peaceful transition of power, and this is why I agreed to appear before you today.”

Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are quietly helping Big Oil destroy the climate

So much for Google's slogan, "Don't be evil."

ExxonMobil and Microsoft announced last week that they are partnering in the “largest-ever oil and gas” deal to use cloud computing, which the corporations say will boost production up to 50,000 barrels of oil per day by 2025.

Microsoft likes to tout how it’s running its operations on 100 percent renewable energy and embracing the Paris climate agreement. The company’s founder, Bill Gates, also portrays himself as a champion of climate action.

But the tech giant is working overtime to close deals with the world’s biggest oil companies to help them boost fossil fuel production using the latest information technology, such as cloud computing, which enables companies to capture, store, and analyze vast amount of data in real time.

And Microsoft isn’t alone. Many of the most well-known tech giants we think of as green and sustainable — including Amazon and Google — are helping the dirtiest polluters increase production of climate-destroying fossil fuels.

And then to top it all off they pay no taxes, to clean up this shit, they are helping to promote.......FUCK THEM....................

LePage: Eliminating Electoral College Would Make Whites 'A Forgotten People'

By Kate Riga
February 28, 2019 7:52 am

Former Gov. Paul LePage (R) tore apart a bill currently in the Maine state legislature that proposes essentially eliminating the Electoral College in favor of the popular vote because it would only “be minorities that elect” the President.

According to a Thursday Maine Beacon report, LePage told local radio station WVOM that the legislation would render him and other whites “a forgotten people.”

“Actually what would happen if they do what they say they’re gonna do is white people will not have anything to say,” LePage said. “It’s only going to be the minorities that would elect. It would be California, Texas, Florida.”

LePage has made some unrelated headlines lately, allegedly just finding out that his administration (thus, the taxpayers) spent $1,100 per night on Trump hotel rooms and contending that a lost 2018 House race was a “stolen election.”

Texas Election Chief's Nomination Advances Amid Bogus Voter List Uproar

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Associated Press
February 28, 2019 12:35 pm

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The nomination of Texas’ embattled secretary of state is advancing a day after a federal judge blamed him for wrongly questioning the U.S. citizenship of tens of thousands of voters.

A Senate committee voted 4-3 along party lines Thursday to send Secretary of State David Whitley’s nomination to the full chamber. But Democrats have signaled they have enough votes to ultimately reject Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s choice for chief Texas elections officer.

Whitley’s future has been in jeopardy since his office released a deeply flawed list of 98,000 registered voters identified as potential non-citizens. The list stoked Republican claims of potential voter fraud but failed to exclude scores of naturalized U.S. citizens.

A federal judge Wednesday ruled that Whitley “created this mess” and blocked the removal of any registered voters.

No Deal: Trump Abruptly Left North Korea Summit Without Nuclear Agreement

By DEB RIECHMANN and JILL COLVIN
February 28, 2019 6:59 am

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — The table was set, with flowers in vases and menus tucked inside white napkins. Water glasses were filled. Wicker fans provided a cool breeze.

But nobody came.

“Schedule change,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced.

That was the first indication something was up at President Donald Trump’s two-day summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

But what did it mean for the prospects of denuclearizing?

Reporters and photographers assembled to record the leaders’ lunchtime chitchat were hustled out of the room and eventually from building in anticipation of Trump’s departure.
