Birx Says CDC Guidelines Are 'Still Being Worked On' After Trump Shelved First Report

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Cristina Cabrera

May 8, 2020 7:56 a.m.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House's COVID-19 task force, said on Thursday night that she and the White House are editing the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) guide on reopening the economy after President Donald Trump's administration nixed it the first time.

"We are in deep partnership with CDC, both for the White House guidelines that were put out on how to open up America again, but also the details behind the guidelines," Birx told CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

The doctor said those recommendations are "still being worked on."

She claimed that "no one has stopped those guidelines," though a task official confirmed as much earlier on Thursday when reports of the White House shelving the CDC's guide emerged.

Barr slammed as 'blatantly corrupt' for tossing Flynn case despite guilty plea

By Emily Singer -May 8, 2020 9:23 AM

Some Democratic lawmakers are calling for Barr's resignation.

Attorney General William Barr's decision to drop charges against former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn has led to an outcry from Democratic lawmakers, who say this is the latest move by Barr to politicize the Department of Justice and do Donald Trump's bidding.

"Flynn pled guilty to lying to the FBI about his illicit Russian contacts. His lies do not now become truths. This dismissal does not exonerate him. But it does incriminate Bill Barr. In the worst politicization of the Justice Department in its history," House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) tweeted Thursday.

Barr announced on Thursday that the DOJ was dropping Flynn's charges of lying to the FBI during the Russia investigation, even though Flynn pled guilty to doing just that.

Donald Trump and his right-wing defenders have been pushing for the case against Flynn to be dropped — which Democrats pointed to as they criticized Barr's move.

Trump claims his crimes aren't on tape like Nixon's. Actually, they are.

By Emily Singer -May 8, 2020 10:33 AM

Trump on Friday said he 'learned a lot from Richard Nixon' — the corrupt former president who resigned in disgrace.

Donald Trump on Friday morning defended his behavior and comments surrounding the Russia investigation, saying he "learned a lot from Richard Nixon" about how to handle probes into his administration.

"I learned a lot. I study history," Trump said in an interview with "Fox & Friends" — referring to what he learned from Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre," in which Nixon fired Department of Justice officials looking into his handling of the Watergate scandal.

"And the firing of everybody — I should've in one way, but I'm glad I didn't because look at the way it turned out. They're all a bunch of crooks and they got caught."

Trump continued, "Of course, there was one difference, one big difference. Number one, he may have been guilty. And number two, he had tapes all over the place. I wasn't guilty. I did nothing wrong, and there are no tapes. But I wish there were tapes in my case."

Trump official blames workers for getting sick as they're forced to keep working

By Dan Desai Martin -May 7, 2020 1:44 PM

HHS Secretary Alex Azar blamed workers at meatpacking plants for virus transmission the CDC says results from conditions at the plants.

Alex Azar, Donald Trump's secretary of Health and Human Services, blamed workers' lifestyle for coronavirus outbreaks at meatpacking plants across the nation, Politico reported on Thursday.

On a call with members of Congress in late April, Azar blamed the "home and social" conditions of workers for the spread of the virus, three people on the call told Politico, rather than the conditions in the plants.

Meanwhile, last week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report that explicitly blames working conditions at meatpacking plants for transmission of the virus.

The CDC found "structural and operational practices that made it difficult to maintain a 6-foot (2-meter) distance while working, especially on production lines, and in nonproduction settings during breaks and while entering and exiting facilities."

GOP congressman caught on tape pushing false election results

Source: American Independent

By Dan Desai Martin -May 7, 2020 12:32 PM1 Comment4153

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) is yet another Republican caught in an election fraud scandal.

Rep. Ken Buck, the chair of the Colorado Republican Party, was caught on tape allegedly pressuring a district GOP party chair to sign a false affidavit certifying the results of that district assembly's vote on the nomination of candidates for a Republican primary to replace its term-limited state senator.

State Senate District 10 assembly delegates voted on March 22 on the candidacies of Republican activist David Stiver and state Rep. Larry Liston to run for the seat. With a 30% vote threshold for advancing to the June primary, Stiver received 24% of the vote; Liston received 75%.

In the midst of allegations by Stiver and supporters of irregularities in the assembly voting process, Buck spoke to state Senate District 10 party chair Eli Bremer during a meeting of the Colorado Republican Party's central committee.

On a tape of the conversation obtained by the Denver Post, Buck can be heard telling Bremer, "Do you understand that the order of the executive committee and the central committee, that you will submit the paperwork to include Mr. Stivers [sic] and Mr. Liston on the ballot, with Mr. Liston receiving the top-line vote?"

Top House Republican: Let's ignore Trump's virus response and just investigate China

By Josh Israel -May 7, 2020 4:12 PM

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) doesn't think there needs to be any accountability for the administration when it comes to their coronavirus response.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), the newly appointed ranking member of the House's Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, said Thursday that the panel should focus on investigating China.

The Minority Whip released a statement noting his "misgivings about Speaker Pelosi's intentions behind the creation of this select committee."

"Rather than letting this effort devolve into yet another political witch hunt, I am determined to focus the subcommittee's work on three important areas that Speaker Pelosi continues to overlook: holding China accountable for hiding the truth about the virus from the world, helping ensure the success of the largest relief effort in American history, and providing clear and immediate guidance on how to safely reopen our economy," Scalise said in the statement.

"We must stick to the facts and keep our subcommittee focused on what matters: restoring the physical and economic health of the American people so we can reestablish the strength and security of our great nation. I welcome Chairman Clyburn and the other Democrats on this committee to join us in this effort," he added.

GOP candidate says 'healthy folks' should be exempt from coronavirus rules

By Josh Israel -May 7, 2020 4:44 PM

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Dan Forest continues to spread false information about the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, currently running as the Republican nominee for governor of the state, told a right-wing outlet this week that social distancing rules are only necessary for older and sick people and that rural counties in North Carolina can safely reopen. Public health experts say this is false.

"We know who the people are that are actually at real risk of this virus. It is the people that are the elderly and those that have immune issues already," Forest told the Daily Signal on Tuesday.

"So people that are at risk fall into those categories, and so you can protect those people by quarantining them, having them stay at home for extra periods of time, creating shopping hours for those folks that don’t interfere with other people, creating times at restaurants where those people could actually go and get their food without coming into contact. All these kinds of things. We know the demographics of the people that are hospitalized and the people that are dying," he said.

Noting that many rural counties in North Carolina have had no reported deaths and that in others those that had the virus have probably recovered, Forest urged the reopening of much of the state's economy. "I think we need to let the healthy folks get back to their livelihoods and allow freedom to reign again in America," he said. "Personal responsibility and freedom is really important, but the government picking winners and losers in the economy based on their own preferences is, I think, a pretty bad thing."

Trump has been hiding his taxes from Congress for 400 days

By Dan Desai Martin -May 7, 2020 5:15 PM

The Trump administration 'has no basis whatsoever to refuse to comply with this request,' said Rep. Richard Neal, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee.

It has been 400 days since Congress sent a letter to the Internal Revenue Service demanding to see Donald Trump's personal and business taxes from 2013 to 2018.

For more than a year, Trump has refused to comply with the April 3, 2019 request from Rep. Richard Neal, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, despite a law requiring him to do so.

"I used my authority to make this request as part of the Committee's legitimate legislative and oversight functions," Neal said in an email this week.

He added that the Trump administration "has no basis whatsoever to refuse to comply with this request" and said he continues to fight in federal court to force the administration to follow the law.

Wisconsin Supreme Court justice: Meatpackers aren't 'regular folks'

Source: American Independent

By Emily Singer -May 7, 2020 3:09 PM

Wisconsin judge Patience Roggensack is being slammed as an 'elitist' for her remark that meatpackers contracting coronavirus aren't like other people in the state.

The conservative chief justice of Wisconsin's state Supreme Court is under fire after she said this week that meatpackers in Wisconsin who have contracted the coronavirus aren't "regular folks" like other residents of the state.

Chief Justice Patience Roggensack made the comment during oral arguments conducted via teleconferencing on Tuesday in a suit brought by Republican lawmakers against Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' stay-at-home orders.

Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General Colin Roth, arguing on behalf of Evers, cited a surge in cases in Brown County as an example of why the orders were necessary. Roth said cases in Brown County "surged from just 60 to almost 800" over the course of two weeks. The outbreak was traced to the JBS Packerland meatpacking plant in the county, at which 300 workers were sickened by the coronavirus, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Roggensack interjected.

"These were due to the meatpacking, though," she said. "That's where Brown County got the flare. It wasn't just the regular folks in Brown County."
