Wella's JournalWe can't let the GOP demoralize us: GO VOTE and GET YOUR FRIENDS TO VOTE!
I know the news looks bad, but the GOP does NOT have the Senate locked up. Elections are based on who votes, not on how the population polls, necessarily. The best thing we can do is get ourselves and our like-minded friends to vote. Offer to drive people to the polls! Get involved with your local Democratic GOTV! Talk to your family and friends about how crucial this election is.
WE HAVE NOT LOST YET...AND WE CAN STILL PULL A WIN.
Will you support the 2016 Democratic candidate, even if it's someone you don't like?
I know I will. I want to see a good primary season with some real debate, but in the end, I'm voting for anyone with a (D) after their name. The stakes are just too high this time. For women. For healthcare. For the planet.

Governor vetoes bill that would have limited police use of droneshttp://www.latimes.com/local/political/la-me-ln-governor-vetoes-bill-to-limit-police-use-of-drones-20140928-story.html
Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday vetoed a bill that would have required law enforcement agencies to obtain warrants to use drones for surveillance.
Brown, in his veto message, said that although there may be some circumstances when a warrant is appropriate, the bill went too far.
The measure appeared to impose restrictions on law enforcement that go beyond federal and state constitutional protections against unreasonable search and seizures and the right to privacy, the governor stated.
The bill, AB 1327, would have required the government to secure a warrant from a judge before using surveillance drones except in cases of environmental emergencies such as oil or chemical spills. Three other states have placed a moratorium on drone use by state and local agencies
Assemblyman Jeff Gorell (R-Camarillo), the bills author, had argued that the expanded use of drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, by law enforcement has pushed the boundaries of the publics reasonable expectation of privacy, triggering a need for protection.
Gorell said the governor's veto was "very disappointing."
Jeb Bush has announced he will run, Romney and Hillary are seriously considering it; The Donald too.
Are we in election rerun season?
How does this alerting thing work?
I've just joined and one of my first interactions on the board was with someone who accused me of being a Monsanto shill because I asked questions about what GMOs actually were. I responded that I thought the poster was being rude, but was chided by a moderator who said not to engage but to alert. So tonight, a rather petulant young woman accused me of being a "new" poster (I assume there was an accusation of not being a kosher Democrat in there somewhere) simply because I was not impressed with her knowledge base:

Thinking this akin to the accusation about being a Monsanto shill, I alerted. A jury of seven people all decided that the accusation was ok and should stand. I'm not really sure I understand what this jury system really is and how alerts work. I thought that an alert would bring a moderator in who would admonish the accusing poster. Instead it brings in seven strangers, none of whom took the situation terribly seriously.
I am not sure what to do here. Do I continue to alert? Do I engage?
Termites: what is a landlord's responsibility?
This may be the wrong forum, but I hope not. I rented an apartment starting last spring. My lease is up April 1. One day last week I came home and there were flying bugs all over my windows and crawling around the carpet in the room that serves as my office. I called the manager and she came right away. She's young and works for a large management company that is supposed to be very good. Well, these bugs turned out to be termites. It turns out that August/September is the beginning of termite season and they can last through the hot weather here. I heard from both the manager and the exterminator (who came last week) that this building had had termites last year in the apartment next to mine. It's a small building (about 6 units) but I'm guessing the whole thing is infested.
I got home today and the termites were back again and so were some larvae. These were smaller, lighter and wiggly. I've been killing everything with spray cleaner (I have a cat and don't want to use pesticides). Termites kill easy and they are apparently not something that bothers cats, but if there are larvae around, it means that some of these buggers are reproducing right here in my apartment. The exterminator could not find the entrance point and the management company has said nothing about tenting the place.
Since termites are not a renter's responsibility, I am wondering how to handle this. Are there any renter's rights people on this board who could help?
