Bad news: Religious cyber-vigilantism on the rise

From the article:

......................“Homosexualist James Martin to Address DC Seminary Alumni,” ran the headline on Church Militant’s August 18 story. Martin (“known for his advocacy of same-sex genital acts and transgender ideology”) put himself in the crosshairs by daring to publish a book that urges a nicer, more accepting relationship between the Catholic Church and the LGBT community.

Colin Kaepernick vs. Tim Tebow: A tale of two Christians on their knees

From the article:

Here, Michael Frost reflects on the differences between Kaepernick and Tim Tebow.
They're both Christian football players, and they're both known for kneeling on the field, although for very different reasons.
One grew up the son of Baptist missionaries to the Philippines. The other was baptized Methodist, confirmed Lutheran, and attended a Baptist church during college.
Both have made a public display of their faith. Both are prayerful and devout......

This is the tale of two Christian sports personalities, one of whom is the darling of the American church while the other is reviled. And their differences reveal much about the brand of Christianity preferred by many in the church today.

Speaking of NASCAR,

are any current NASCAR drivers military veterans?

Given what the various NASCAR organization figures have said about the kneeling controversy, how many drivers and NASCAR celebrities served in the US military?

Simply curious.

What if McCain and Collins and the other "moderate Republicans" are really acting for McConnell?

I have read some threads speaking of McCain and Collins as being moderate and principled, and I understand the desire to believe that there must be some few sane GOP Congress members. It is the "they cannot all be crazy, can they?" belief.

But what if Collins and McCain are actually following orders?

McConnell might be a corrupt racist, but he is cunning enough to keep his majority relatively united. So what if all of this soul searching on the part of Collins and McCain is nothing more than McConnell seeing that the public does not like the direction that the GOP is going?

If the Graham, Cassidy, Heller, Satan healthcare bill actually passed, the GOP might actually lose control of one or both houses of Congress. And McConnell needs control to pass the real meat of the GOP agenda, the tax cuts for the 1%.

Thoughts?

I was sitting in my garden on this 90 degree September day, watching the butterflies visiting

the flowers, and looking at all of the ripe peppers and tomatoes. All the splashes of red among the green foliage. The leaves are turning, the smell of fall is in the air even if the temperature feels like summer.

I say this because with all of the ugliness and negativity that Trump is cultivating in his garden of evil, there is still much that is good.

We must resist, and organize, and protest, but we must also be mindful that Trump, as toxic as he is, is not permanent. His nasty rhetoric is a sign of his fear that he will be exposed as what he is...............a failure as a businessman and as a person.

Which is the worst?

A racist con man and failed businessman who laughs as he lies his way through life, or

those who follow him?

I called for Christians to love gay people. Now the Catholic alt-right is taking revenge.

From the article:

After a gunman killed 49 people at Pulse, a predominantly gay nightclub in Orlando in 2016, I found myself disappointed that more Catholic leaders did not offer support to the LGBT community. And that the few who did found it difficult to acknowledge that LGBT people specifically had been targeted for murder......

In response, I recorded a brief video that was posted on Facebook. It offered some support for the LGBT community during a terribly difficult few weeks......

Now, in the past few weeks, three lectures I was invited to have been canceled, and I have been targeted by some far-right groups whose actions betray a level of homophobia that is hard to fathom.

Abortion access: "The right is storming women's clinics"

From the article:

ANTI-ABORTION demonstrators invaded three clinics around the country on September 15, physically forcing their way in and refusing to leave in a coordinated escalation of the right-wing attack on women's right to choose......

The reality is that this is an attempt to physically harass and terrorize abortion providers, clinic staff and the women who need care--with the goal of shutting the clinics down.........

On its website, 40 Days for Life boasts actions in 715 cities worldwide with 4,876 local campaigns. It also claims responsibility for the closure of 86 abortion clinics.

Centrism.biz: Scathing New Parody Site Rips Mask Off 'Zombie Neoliberalism'

From the article:

But what about an online home for the dedicated centrists: for those who prefer small ideas to large ones; for those who oppose both fascism and universal healthcare; for those who take money from the murderous Saudi regime and still claim to value human rights?
Centrists, the wait is finally over: Centrism.biz is the brand new, one-stop shop for all things "moderate."

NOTE: Launched by Canadian comedy writer Scott Vrooman, Centrism.biz is obviously a parody—a rebuke of centrist ideas rather than an embrace of them.

Sociologist Rodney Stark gets cranky about religion

From the article:

Most recently, the Baylor University professor penned “Why God: Explaining Religious Phenomena.” He explains why faith is a universal feature of human societies, and he argues against emerging theories that any system of belief about the meaning of life can be considered “religion.” That term must necessarily include a belief in a God or gods, Stark says.
