Database error leaves 150 million voter records exposed online

More than 150 million U.S. voter records were available publicly due to a misconfigured database, a data firm confirmed Wednesday — the second such accidental exposure of voter data in six months.

The records were compiled by the voter information brokerage L2, but were not leaked by L2. Chris Vickery, a security researcher at MacKeeper, said the data was being hosted on a Google cloud account. The data has since been taken down.

“When I called L2, I told them that someone was giving their data away for free,” said Vickery. “They were pretty quickly able to tell who the client was.”


Visible data included names, addresses, political preferences, and opinions on issues including same-sex marriage and gun control. In total, there were 326 gigabytes of sensitive data improperly being handled online.

The Republican censorship of this extremely important day is an absolute outrage and just goes to show how little freedom of information this government wants us to have!

Sanders' anti-superdelegate push gains steam in Senate

A growing number of senators back changes to a system critics say gives party bosses undue sway to decide the nominee.

A growing number of Democratic senators support reforming the party’s superdelegate system — a move that would dilute their own power in the presidential nominating process but satisfy Bernie Sanders and his millions of supporters as Democrats move to unify for the general election.

Politico interviewed nearly 20 of Sanders’ colleagues over the past week and found a surprisingly strong appetite for change, including among influential members of the party establishment such as Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), a top prospect for vice president. More than half the senators surveyed support at least lowering the number of superdelegates, and all but two said the party should take up the matter at next month’s convention in Philadelphia, despite the potential for a high-profile intraparty feud at a critical moment in the campaign.

The findings point to growing momentum among Democrats for changing a system that’s been criticized for giving party bigwigs undue sway over the nominee at the expense of the grass roots. But powerful Democratic Party constituencies, including the Congressional Black Caucus, are firmly opposed. And lawmakers who are open to reform disagree over how far-reaching it should be.

29 ‘Sanders Democrats’ Win in Maine Primaries, Advance To General Elections

The Sanders political revolution continues to spread throughout the Democratic Party, as 29 “Sanders Democrats” won their respective primaries for state government positions in Maine on Tuesday. Four first-time primary winners will be joining a field of 25 other candidates who either already hold state office or ran unopposed in their respective primaries, all of whom have previously endorsed Bernie Sanders.

Ben Chipman, who is currently a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, defeated two challengers, Charles Radis and Diane Russell, taking 53% of the vote. Chipman will not run for re-election, choosing to face off against Republican Mark Lockman and Green Party candidate, Seth Baker, for the Maine State Senate 27th District seat.

Justin Chenette, also currently serving in the Maine State House of Representatives, will forego reelection to the House and try and win the 31st State Senate District seat after defeating Barry Hobbins with 56% of the vote. Chenette will run against Republican William Gombar in the general election to decide who will win the seat.

AFL-CIO Says 'No' To Debbie Wasserman Schultz

For the first time in 24 years, Debbie Wasserman Schultz will not get the endorsement of the AFL-CIO.

Despite winning the recommendation of the Broward County chapter, Wasserman Schultz failed to get the required 2/3 votes to secure the endorsement.

The National AFL-CIO sent out an advisory stating there would be no endorsement of Democrats who voted in favor of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

That includes Wasserman Schultz.

If you remember, Wasserman Schultz’s primary opponent, Tim Canova, protested the recommendation that Wasserman Schultz be endorsed, citing their failure to screen all candidates.

Turns out Canova was right.

At a June 12, 2016 meeting in Orlando, where AFL-CIO president Richard Trumpka was present, as was Wasserman Schultz, delegates from the CWA and the NNU spoke out against Wasserman Schultz. It resulted in the failed endorsement.

BERNIE SANDERS: Almost 7,000 of my supporters just signed up to run for office

Bernie Sanders has inspired thousands of supporters to express interest in running for political office.

After the Vermont senator made an impassioned plea to his supporters during a Thursday-night webcast to carry the "political revolution" forward, his campaign released a statement claiming that nearly 6,700 of his people said that they'd be interested in seeking elected office.

The supporters went to a portal on Sanders' campaign website, BernieSanders.com/win, and signed up to receive more information about running at the local or state level.

The campaign said that roughly 11,000 expressed interest in either running or volunteering to help other Sanders supporters run.

Hillary Clinton invokes unlikely allies on the stump — the Bushes

Hillary Clinton praised a former president to a crowd of cheering liberal supporters earlier this month as “absolutely committed” and unwavering in his support of one of her causes.

The man she spoke of was not her husband, Bill Clinton, or Barack Obama, whom she hopes to succeed. It was George W. Bush — long one of the left’s most potent villains.

In an unusual election year, when a quarter of Republicans say they do not have a favorable opinion of their presumptive nominee, Clinton is making striking overtures to conservatives even as she works to shore up support on the left flank of her party by winning over Sen. Bernie Sanders’ liberal backers.

That’s included surprisingly warm talk about both former Presidents Bush, as well as GOP icon Ronald Reagan. At a campaign stop in Westminster, Calif., earlier this month, Clinton said she was fortunate enough to have known “a lot of presidents.”

“I knew President George H.W. Bush, and he was always willing to talk about issues and ask what was on your mind,” she said. Of his son, she offered more specific praise, saying he was “absolutely committed” after 9/11 to his promise to get New York City the billions of dollars it needed to rebuild. “He never wavered and I’ll never forget that,” she said of Bush, as a few supporters clapped tepidly. (At Nancy Reagan’s funeral in March, a CNN journalist posted a photo of the two hugging.)

Earlier this week, Clinton cited Bush again in her first remarks addressing the terrorist attack in Orlando, praising him for speaking at a Muslim community center just six days after the 9/11 attacks to send a message that the American Muslim community should not be blamed for them.

Clinton: I support women registering for the draft

Hillary Clinton supports a measure that would require women to register for the draft.

The former secretary of state told the Huffington Post Wednesday that she is in favor of a legislative amendment that would for the first time compel women to register with the Selective Service System. That legislation passed the Senate Wednesday as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, which cleared the upper chamber on a bipartisan, 85-13 vote.

“I am on record as supporting the all-volunteer military, which I think at this time does serve our country well,” Clinton said. “And I am very committed to supporting and really lifting up the men and women in uniform and their families.”

The amendment requiring women to sign up for the draft was popular among Democrats and some Republicans, including Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), both of whom praised the move. The legislation drew criticism from more conservative senators though: Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) both opposed the amendment and worked to strip it from the defense authorization act.

“The idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat, to my mind, makes little or no sense,” Cruz told POLITICO Pro. “It is at a minimum a radical proposition. I could not vote for a bill that did so, particularly that did so without public debate.”
