(corrects to say GM will increase engineering jobs to total of 1,000, not create 1,000 jobs)
By Allison Martell
OSHAWA, Ontario, June 10 (Reuters) - General Motors Co said on Friday it will expand its Canadian engineering base to reach a total of about 1,000 jobs in Canada's auto-making province of Ontario as it boosts research spending on connected and driverless cars.
GM also said it would invest $10 million in its Kapuskasing, Ontario cold-weather facility, where it would conduct testing for new GM products and technologies.
Ontario hailed the announcement as a sign of confidence in Canadian automaking, which has been losing ground in recent years to Mexico where costs are lower.
Mexico's auto production rose 5.6 percent while exports climbed 4.4 percent in 2015 over the prior year, the Mexican Auto Industry Association (AMIA) said in January. The auto sector makes up about 30 percent of Mexico's exports
Ontario assembly plants produced nearly 15 percent of North American vehicles over the last five years and the auto industry contributes around $16 billion annually to the province's GDP.

Amazon Targets India Growth With $3 Billion Investment Boost
Source: Bloomberg
Amazon.com Inc. will invest $3 billion more to build its business in India, stepping up its bet that the country will become a major online-shopping market that will fuel sales growth.
The latest commitment, unveiled by Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos at the U.S.-India Business Councils Leadership Summit in Washington, more than doubles Amazons total pledged investment since 2014 to $5 billion.
Amazon has targeted India for international growth after pulling back from China due to fierce competition from that countrys e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. In addition to seeking new customers, Amazon is also looking in India for new inventory to sell globally. Amazon, which gets most of its international revenue from the U.K., Japan and Germany, doesnt break out sales from India. Revenue from a group of other international markets, including India, reached $7.4 billion in 2015, or 6.9 percent of total sales.
The added investment reflects the success to-date of Amazon in India, as well as a bright outlook for the e-commerce market in the region, said Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co. Its really down to a two or maybe three-horse race, and Amazon clearly would like to be the winner.

Why do the cons pre-order a book that the bulk buyers will be giving away in a few weeks
There is a book that has been at the top of Amazon's best-seller list since a little news aggregator site 1st flogged it yesterday.
I'm sure we all know that conservative groups bulk purchase these things to inflate the numbers and get them listed on NYT Best Seller list then pass them out at their rallies.
And by the end of the month it'll be on the bargain table at Sam's club, Walmart, Costco and whats left of Barnes & Noble
So why do they pre-order from Amazon
*Amazon makes up a higher percentage of the total US ebook market than the oft-cited 65% figure: when indie books without ISBNs are included in the statistics, Amazon accounts for 74% of all US ebook purchases and 71% of all US consumer dollars spent on ebooks.*
Obama calls on Democrats to stop violence at Trump rallies
President Obama said Friday night that Democrats should stop assaulting Donald Trump supporters at political rallies, even as the president told wealthy donors that Mr. Trump is exploiting voters resentment of immigrants and gays.
The president said opponents of Mr. Trump shouldnt resort to violence, as occurred at a rally in San Jose this week, where a mob of anti-Trump demonstrators terrorized supporters, throwing punches, hurling eggs and intimidating them.

We saw in San Jose these protesters starting to pelt stuff and Trump supporters, Mr. Obama said at a fundraiser near Biscayne Bay, Florida. Thats not what our democracy is about. Thats not what you do. Theres no room for violence. Theres no place for shouting. Theres no room for a politics that fails to at least listen to the other side even if you vehemently disagree.
The president said Democrats must remind ourselves of who we are and what is best about American democracy, and not slip into some of the bad habits that currently manifest themselves in the other party.
I believe if youve got the better argument, then you dont need to do that [engage in violence], Mr. Obama said. Just go out there and organize and persuade.
The fundraiser was hosted at the home of personal injury lawyer Robert Rubenstein; tickets ranged from $10,000 to $30,000.

U.S. strikes Islamic State from Mediterranean carrier for first time
*Notice that this is from Reuters Business Section, can you guess why?*
U.S. fighter jets on Friday launched the first strikes against Islamic State targets from an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea since the start of the two-year campaign against the militant group, the U.S. Navy said.
The jets flew from the USS Harry S. Truman after the ship moved into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, marking the first air strikes conducted by a carrier group in that region since the Iraq war began in 2003, Navy officials said.
Previous strikes were launched solely by U.S. and allied pilots from carriers in the Gulf or from land bases in Bahrain, Turkey and other countries.
The Navy said the raids targeted Iraq and Syria, but gave no details on how many and what type of targets were hit.
The United States is increasingly concerned about Russia's growing military presence in the region, and the air strikes also send a message to Turkey that the U.S. military has other ways to conduct its air war over Syria than from the Turkish air base at Incirlik.

The Nuclear Option Could Be Best Bet to Combat Climate Change

To cut CO2 pollution, experts argue for nuclear power
By Umair Irfan, ClimateWire on June 3, 2016
CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo.The 31-year-old Callaway Energy Center is doing some heavy lifting.
Missouris lone nuclear power plant produces 11.7 percent of the states electricity from one reactor cranking out 1.2 gigawatts, making it the third-largest electricity producer in the state. Its 553-foot-tall, cloud-spewing cooling tower is the second-tallest structure in Missouri behind the St. Louis Arch, two hours drive east.
We are a baseload plant, Cox says. About 3,565 megawatts thermal and about 1,283 MW electric go out onto the grid. So its about 30 percent efficiency from what I have to produce inside the core from a heat point of view to what I get out on the electric grid, and thats typical for all steam-producing plants.
But Callaway really flexes its muscles when it comes to zero-carbon-emissions energy in a coal-heavy portfolio. Missouri gets 82 percent of its electricity from coal, and the recently bankrupt Peabody Energy Corp., the nations largest coal company, is based in St. Louis.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that Missouri ranks 13th in total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Wind, solar, biomass and hydroelectric power provide the state with just 2.2 percent of its electricity. That means 83 percent of Missouris carbon-free energy comes from Callaway.

Three boys, ages 8, 5 and 2 months, were found stabbed to death at a north Phoenix home early Thursday. Their mother, a suspect in their murder, was hospitalized in critical condition with self-inflicted stab wounds, a Phoenix police spokesman said Thursday.
The older boys were found in a closet, and the infant was found in a suitcase, said Sgt. Trent Crump, Phoenix police spokesman.
The woman, who is 29, stabbed herself in the abdomen and the neck, Crump said.
The woman had grown up in Phoenix and had moved to Virginia in 2014, Crump said, and had moved back for the birth of the 2-month-old.
