Police make up charges, record themselves unwittingly

And this is how some crooked cops operate. The "perpetrator" was protesting at a DUI checkpoint, not something I would encourage, but he was peaceful. The charges are concocted from nothing valid at all.

The ACLU of Connecticut is suing state police for fabricating retaliatory criminal charges against a protester after troopers were recorded discussing how to trump up charges against him. In what seems like an unlikely stroke of cosmic karma, the recording came about after a camera belonging to the protester, Michael Picard, was illegally seized by a trooper who didn’t know that it was recording and carried it back to his patrol car, where it then captured the troopers’ plotting.

“Let’s give him something,” one trooper declared. Another suggested, “we can hit him with creating a public disturbance.” “Gotta cover our ass,” remarked a third.

Procrastinating. I do it well.

A thread about procreating would be more interesting, but I went with procrastinating.

I have some contract work to do outside of my regular job. It pays well. I'm happy to have it. I had the month of September to complete it. I'm pretty well down to the last 10 days of the month and it's about 1/3 done. The remainder is doable, but it won't be without some sweating and unnecessary stress from leaving the bulk of it to the tail end.

I'm not a high school or college kid anymore. I know better, but I have now put myself behind the 8 ball. I should be working on it right now, but I'm posting here.

I expect this sort of response:

Do you regularly put stuff off? Office projects? Household maintenance or chores? Taxes?

Organized religion in U.S. worth more than Google, Apple and Amazon combined

Fascinating. Even as the faith-based crowd gradually shrinks, and even though many churches have paid out big bucks in lawsuits to sexually assaulted parishioners, religion is still worth a shit ton of money:

Religion in the United States is worth $1.2tn a year, making it equivalent to the 15th largest national economy in the world, according to a study.

The faith economy has a higher value than the combined revenues of the top 10 technology companies in the US, including Apple, Amazon and Google, says the analysis from Georgetown University in Washington DC.

Co-author Brian Grim said it was a conservative estimate. More than 344,000 congregations across the US collectively employ hundreds of thousands of staff and buy billions of dollars worth of goods and services.

More than 150 million Americans, almost half the population, are members of faith congregations, according to the report. Although numbers are declining, the sums spent by religious organisations on social programmes have tripled in the past 15 years, to $9bn.

College athlete gets 15 years for rape of unconscious woman

Unlike the Brock Turner case, this sentence is more fitting. But the guilty party has a little more melanin...

Good Samaritan stories

My wife lost her wallet for the first time in her life on Saturday. Of course with the Labor Day long weekend, there was a lot of anguish over the hassle of cancelling and replacing credit cards and a bank card and her health cards and her driver's license, and the potential loss of $300 in cash (she doesn't normally carry that much around with her, but she had recently some some second-hand items).

Then today she received a call from the post office that her wallet had been placed in a mail box, and they had it at one of their postal outlets, ready for her to pick up. Everything was still contained inside, including the cash!

We have no idea who did this good deed, but we're happy that an honest individual was the one to stumble upon her wallet. There are still a lot of good people in this world.

Between my wife and I, we have found one wallet and one purse over the years. We returned them to their rightful owners in both cases. I would never hesitate to do that, and would never dream of keeping any of someone else's money. I also pulled over on the side of the highway once and changed a tire for two women with a flat since neither of them could budge the lug nuts (they weren't sure of the next steps anyway).

Have you been a Good Samaritan or had someone else save your bacon?

Revered biologist fears climate change, nukes and TRUMP most of all!

Speaks volumes!

Former Harvard biology professor E.O. Wilson is one of the most respected and revered conservationists alive today.

So you might find it curious that his biggest fear isn’t climate change or the ongoing mass extinction that destroys an estimated 150-200 species every day.

Nope. It’s Donald Trump.

“My main worry right now is that the Republican candidate might win the election,” Wilson said in an interview with The Huffington Post and its Hawaii partner Honolulu Civil Beat at the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress in Honolulu.
