Better dead than read?

Will the people in the red states choose anti-intellectualism and slavish loyalty over survival?

Thinking the unthinkable - planning to treat COVID-19 at home.

People infected with COVID virus will either,
1. Never show serious symptoms,
2. Recover with minimal treatment,
3. Recover only with aggressive treatment in a hospital or,
4. Die.

It's worth thinking about what can possibly be done to shift some people from group 3 to group 2. This is not about seeking that surprise miracle cure. It's about what combination of antibiotics, expectorants, decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, anti-inflammatories, and God knows what else that will, even minutely, increase the survival rate of people who really should be in an ICU but can't be there because there are no beds available. Hell, I'd even take a crack at building a home-made ventilator, if it came to that.

Maybe it's time for the medical community to start thinking about those kinds of things.

What is Trump eating these days?

I remember hearing that he favors fast food because the person preparing it doesn't know it's for him and has no opportunity to poison it, but what about now? Who knows what's up with the person who made that burger?

Trump might cross the Rubicon tonight.

If he makes it clear the official world view of his administration re:COVID-19 is Pollyanna-ish and dissent will be punished— we’re on our own.

The news from American media is about to get a lot happier.

All the major media operate in a national market. No business in a dictatorship can survive for long if it enrages the dictator. The media will have to make a decision at some point: make nice to Trump or get hammered into the ground by Barr's rogue Justice Department. I know we'd like to imagine our fearless Fourth Estate standing firm in the face of adversity, but I'm not putting any serious money on it.

A long time ago, a prominent economist wrote about corrupt societies.

(Sorry, can't remember which one.)

He said, that while corrupt societies have many problems, such as undeserving people illicitly skimming money off legitimate transactions, the pre-eminent problem with corrupt societies is that:

They. Do. Not. Work.

Trump's handling (if you could call it that) of the Coronavirus situation reflects that. It's hard to imagine it will get better.
