Supreme Court lets stand the death sentence of Texas inmate

Source: CNN

The Supreme Court on Monday let stand the death sentence of a Texas inmate, rejecting his arguments that Texas state courts had failed to follow the justices’ earlier ruling in his case about whether he received ineffective assistance of counsel at his trial and sentencing.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor – joined by Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan – dissented.

The case centers on Terence Andrus, who, in 2008, at 20 years old, unsuccessfully attempted a carjacking while under the influence of PCP-laced marijuana. He fired multiple shots, killing the car owner, Avelino Diaz, and a bystander, Kim-Phuong Vu Bui. He was charged with capital murder and later sentenced to death.

New lawyers for Andrus said that his trial counsel was ineffective for failing to investigate or present mitigating evidence, including the fact that Andrus’ childhood was marked by neglect and that he grew up surrounded by violence and abuse. His mother, for example, had Andrus, her second of five children, when she was 15. She sold drugs – in view of her children – and engaged in prostitution.

Ocasio-Cortez won't commit to backing Biden in 2024: 'We'll cross that bridge when we get to it'

Source: CNN

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday would not commit to backing President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, saying instead that “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

“I think if the President has a vision, then that’s something certainly we’re all willing to entertain and examine when the time comes,” Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat who wields a significant amount of influence over the party’s progressive wing, told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” when asked if she plans to support Biden in his 2024 reelection bid.

“That’s not a yes,” Bash said, to which the congresswoman replied: “We should endorse when we get to it, but I believe that the President’s been doing a very good job so far, and, you know, should he run again, I think that I, you know, I think … we’ll take a look at it.

“But right now, we need to focus on winning a majority instead of a presidential election,” she added, referring to this year’s November midterm elections.

Biden says Zelensky 'didn't want to hear' U.S. warnings of invasion

Source: Washington Post

President Biden said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “didn’t want to hear it” when U.S. intelligence officials raised warnings of a looming Russian attack before the Feb. 24 invasion, according to the Associated Press.

Biden, who along with Congress has deepened U.S. involvement in the global effort to reject the Russian invasion by recently finalizing more than $40 billion in new military and humanitarian assistance, spoke at a Democratic fundraising event in Los Angeles on Friday night, according to the AP and Bloomberg News. The president spoke about the American commitment to supporting Ukraine four months into the invasion, saying, “Nothing like this has happened since World War II.”

During his talk, Biden also mentioned that his administration had warned Zelensky and the Ukrainian government, based on U.S. intelligence, before the invasion began.

“I know a lot of people thought I was maybe exaggerating,” the president said, according to the AP.

Pelosi: House to vote next week protecting Supreme Court justices and their families after man arres

Pelosi: House to vote next week protecting Supreme Court justices and their families after man arrested near Kavanaugh’s home

Washington CNN — The House will consider a Senate-passed bill to enhance security for Supreme Court justices and their families next week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, after a man was arrested near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home.

“We had hoped that we could do it today but we certainly will do it at the beginning of next week,” Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters.

Though the legislation passed the Senate by unanimous consent in May, it has stalled in the House, angering some lawmakers who have stressed the urgent need for it. It’s still unclear if the House will want to amend the bill to include protection for clerks and other staff, as some lawmakers previously indicated.

Republicans have railed against Democratic leadership for not putting the bill on the floor for a vote before they adjourned for the week. On the House floor Thursday morning, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy asked for the chamber to approve by unanimous consent the Senate-passed bipartisan bill.

Attorney General Garland Condemns Violent Threats Against Supreme Court Justices

Source: Bloomberg News

US Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned threats of violence against justices of the Supreme Court, saying they “strike at the heart of our democracy.”

“We will do everything we can to prevent them,” Garland told reporters Wednesday at a news conference to announce a team led by the Justice Department to review the police response to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

His remarks came after an armed man who had threatened Justice Brett Kavanaugh was arrested near the justice’s home in the early morning.

The federal review of last month’s massacre, which left 19 elementary school students and two teachers dead, comes amid a national debate on gun control and mounting criticism that Texas state and local officials aren’t providing the public with important information about law enforcement’s response to the shooter.

Any new polls on the PA Senate race?

I know I know, some of you hate polls, call them meaningless, etc. Maybe it's a fault of mine, but I can't help it, I love all polls haha. Particularly, I'd especially love to see a new poll (not March or anything) now that we know for sure that it will be Oz representing the bad side.

While the old ones looked encouraging, I did a search and could not find any Oz vs. Fetterman recent polling. If anyone knows any (let's say May 25th and above), please link it. Thanks!
