Joe Frater and Chris Stone were on their way to social media stardom in the elite world of trophy deer hunting.
The two law enforcement officers — Frater is a corrections officer at a local prison; Stone is an investigator for the Amador County district attorney — regularly showed off their trophies from just a few years of hunting with bows and arrows in the Sierra foothills of Northern California.
They posed with impressive, mature bucks that they somehow managed to pull from a place known mostly for its scrawny deer with tiny racks. The men appeared on hunting websites, podcasts and YouTube videos, and they had sponsorships with companies that sell hunting equipment.

"The caliber/type of deer is very rare for a legal CA hunter to harvest, especially with only using archery equipment," Game Warden David Moskat wrote in a 2019 search warrant. "I have known many archery and rifle hunters who would be satisfied to harvest even one of this caliber of buck in a lifetime of legal hunting in California."

After weeks of stakeouts both day and night, they raided the two men's homes, going room to room, rifling through drawers, freezers and closets, seizing deer-head trophies, archery equipment, cellphones, frozen venison, computers, trail camera memory cards, and taxidermy and butcher receipts.
At Frater's home, they seized salt licks, mineral blocks and bags of feed, the sorts of bait used to lure in deer.

Mask-averse Gene Suellentrop, the recently arrested majority leader of the Kansas Senate, called a cop “donut boy” last month when the officer tried testing the Republican politician’s blood-alcohol levels, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained Thursday by WIBW.
The 69-year-old legislator’s blood-alcohol level was found to be twice the legal limit, was arrested just before 1 a.m. local time on March 16 for DUI and fleeing law enforcement, according to the affidavit.
The document says the senator made the doughnut remark in the intoxilyzer room. He had previously refused to take a breathalyzer test, only for a judge to sign a search warrant for his sample.
The lawmaker then turned “slightly aggressive in his tone” and looked the officer “up and down stating that he played state sports competitively in high school” and could “take me,” the document notes.
Prior to the arrest, Suellentrop was going 90 mph in a 65 mph zone, and in the wrong direction, according to the affidavit. In order to pursue him, officers had to similarly drive westbound in eastbound lanes.
The document states the lawmaker, driving a white SUV at the time, nearly hit another car.
In addition to the stench of alcohol, the officer saw the slurring Suellentrop had “watery, droopy” and even bloodshot eyes.

Olympic Bobsledder Who Killed Himself Likely Had C.T.E.Pavle Jovanovic, who represented the United States at the 2006 Olympics, is believed to be the first athlete in a sliding sport to be found with a disease caused by repeated brain traumas.
A former Olympic bobsledder who killed himself last year had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., researchers concluded, the same degenerative brain disease that has been found in former football players and other athletes who participated in violent contact sports.
Pavle Jovanovic hanged himself in his family’s metal works shop in central New Jersey in May 2020. He was 43. He is believed to be the first bobsledder and the first athlete in an Olympic sliding sport to be found with C.T.E. The debilitating brain disease results from multiple head traumas and can cause severe brain degeneration, often long before the stage of life when the wider population experiences brain disorders, such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
The finding of C.T.E. in Jovanovic’s brain is likely to send shock waves through a sport that is just beginning to understand the dangers of what participants refer to casually as “sled head.” Athletes have long used the term to describe the exhausted fog, dizziness and headaches that even a routine run can cause.
Jovanovic was the third elite North American bobsledder to kill himself since 2013. In recent years, an increasing number of current and retired athletes in sliding sports, especially bobsled and skeleton, have said they suffer chronically from many of the same symptoms that plague football players and other contact sport athletes. They deal with constant headaches, a heightened sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises, forgetfulness and psychological problems.

Catastrophic crashes causing athletes to slam into the ice underneath overturned sleds are not uncommon. But a combination of speed and vibrations, especially in the tight turns of a sliding track, can damage the brain even when crashes do not occur, experts say.

Accusations of racism at a Roswell daycare explode online after a livestream video appears to show white children being fed lunch first.
“They were skipping all of the black kids it seemed like," said father Adryan McCauley.
The family said they saw it happen while checking in on their 2-year-old through a video livestream for the Kids R' Kids Roswell location.
“All the white kids got their lunch, and all the black kids had to wait,” said McCauley, who's son is in the picture. “From the videos and pictures that we saw today, we are just completely disturbed.”
So, the stunned family took a screenshot, then went straight to the daycare to confront the staff.
“Mom went and picked him up immediately, and the director said 'I'm not really sure because I'm not in the classroom, maybe it's a dietary thing,'” said McCauley.

"You're a loser. Go home, you stupid b----," he said in a video Kokumai later posted to Instagram. "I'll f--- you up."
As he drove off, he yelled anti-Asian slurs, Kokumai said.
The 28-year-old, who is set to compete in the Tokyo Olympics this summer, said she was stunned to be targeted by the random abuse - and horrified that no one in the park came to her aide.
"Yes, what happened was horrible, but I don't know which was worse, a stranger yelling and threatening to hurt me for no reason or people around me who witnessed everything and not doing a thing," Kokumai wrote on Instagram.

While unaware that he was being recorded by a nursery camera, a Michigan home inspector pleasured himself with an Elmo doll, according to police.
Kevin Wayne VanLuven, 59, was arraigned yesterday on a pair of misdemeanor charges stemming from an unsettling incident last month at a residence in Oxford Township, a Detroit suburb.
Investigators say VanLuven had been hired by the home’s owners to inspect their property prior to a sale. The owners told police that they let VanLuven and the buyer’s real estate agent into the home, then departed the residence during the March 12 inspection.
While away from the property, a 22-year-old female homeowner received an alert on her phone that a webcam had detected movement in the residence’s nursery. The woman then accessed the camera feed and saw VanLuven touching himself, cops report. The home inspector then picked up an Elmo doll and “appeared to be pleasuring himself with the doll,” police charge.

The gunman who killed five people including a prominent doctor, his wife and two grandchildren in South Carolina, was former NFL pro Phillip Adams, who killed himself early Thursday, it was revealed.
A source who was briefed on the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly, said Adams’ parents live near the doctor’s home in Rock Hill, and that he had been treated by Dr Robert Lesslie.
The source said Phillips killed himself after midnight with a .45 caliber weapon.
