MYKOLAIV, Ukraine Mothers with newborn babies, a woman with a heart condition and elderly people who couldnt walk on their own hurriedly evacuated to the basement of a Mykolaiv hospital on Sunday night as the booming thuds of artillery drew closer.
They made it down to shelter just in time. Five minutes after patients and staff had crowded into the cramped underground hallway, a suspected cluster munition landed right next to the building. The blast shattered nearly all of the windows.
It made for an eventful first night for Bohdan, who was born in the makeshift bomb shelter after his mother, Vitalina, and others from the maternity ward made the most harrowing journey to safety, from the hospitals top floor.
The Russians are animals; theres no other explanation, said Bohdans grandmother Vlada. The family declined to provide their surnames out of concerns for their safety.

Russia's Defense Ministry: "Not a single" civilian had been injured in Bucha

It said pictures and video footage from the area were staged by the Ukrainian government.
Russias Defense Ministry on Sunday rejected all accusations that its troops had committed atrocities in Bucha, saying that not a single civilian had been injured while the town was under Russian control. It said pictures and video footage from the area were staged by the Ukrainian government.
This is another provocation, the ministry said in a statement, questioning why peoples corpses in the pictures have not become numb after at least four days, have no characteristic spots, and have uncoagulated blood in their wounds.
The ministry did not provide any proof to support its claims.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show abandoned streets in the suburb of Bucha, which had been one of the most contested areas around the capital. And satellite imagery of a key airport in Hostomel by Maxar Technologies, a U.S.-based imaging company, appeared to show that Russian equipment had been removed sometime in the last 10 days.
But the wide range of Ukrainian claims made on Friday were impossible to independently verify.
Even as Ukrainian counterattacks have pushed Russian forces north, fighting has continued in areas west of Kyiv in recent days. Russia has also been conducting air and missile strikes on Kyiv and Chernihiv, according to Britains Defense Ministry.
