biophile's JournalThank you for my heart(s)! I can't afford to give one to everyone who deserves one, though!
Because you all are wonderful- the smart ones, the snarky ones, the animal lovers, the news breakers, the deep thinkers, the photo takers, the artists, the music lovers, the mental health support group - everyone has a place in my heart and deserves a heart!
Happy Super Bowl (and here, super cold) Sunday!
Lost my last horse on Monday- I have "empty barn syndrome"
We have had one or more horses at a time for the last 37 years. My horse died 5 years ago; we just had the pony left. He was 30 and not rideable due to laminitic feet but he kept me in equine mode- doing stalls, farrier, vet and trips to the feed store.
He became ill on Monday - after two vet visits and with him still in pain, it was time to say goodbye.
The daily routine is changed- no putting him out, no bringing him in, no stall to clean, no Cushings medicine to mix with oats and applesauce. No more looking for him out in the field, no more buying carrots on 5 lb bags
Its the end of an era; a phase of my life now done. Im not a horse mom anymore. *sigh*
Checking in from Kutztown PA No Kings Rally
Good crowd for a small town -at 12:30 there were at least 400-500 people maybe more because I couldnt see everyone up the side streets and around the corners. Mostly older people - disappointing for a college town. But it was Homecoming for Kutztown University and the kids were probably involved in getting drunk for the game 😆. Lots of good signs, lots of positive responses from cars passing by. Best outfit was a guy dressed like chubby drumpf with a diaper and a royal looking robe with faux fur edging. He was flashing his diaper at the cars going by.
A few middle fingers, one old guy in a truck rolling coal at us. One man drove by with a large black sign that said Democrats are Domestic Terrorists 🙄. I had to leave a little early because my ride had other obligations but it was a good day with great weather!
Assistance request- anyone here have experience with deaf cats?
I have two (hopefully) foster kittens. I say hopefully because I might end up keeping them. 😏 They are now about 6-7 weeks old. They are from a restaurant- momma cat had four kitttens in the ceiling. Staff caught two on Easter weekend but them momma moved the other two to an unknown location. They are white with grey tails and their eyes have stayed blue, so classic coloring for deafness.
My question is - are there universal hand signals for deaf cats to indicate come, dinner, pets, no? Any other tips for helping deaf cats navigate the world? These guys are young and very trainable; Id like to do it right.

Who wants to bet they definitely dont get an invite to the White House?
Report from Berks County PA
Berks County is usually reliably red with the exception of the Reading City area proper and some blue suburban districts. I went to the Berks Democratic office to get my poll observer documents and it was mobbed! People coming and going - canvassers, people getting signs, people getting poll observer certificates, etc. Always at least 20-25 cars in the parking lot. Poll watchers coming in from all over - NY, Seattle (!) and DC! Buses across the street with people from other areas volunteering. Flags and banners and signs all over!
Out of curiosity, I drove to the Republican county office. Looked deserted- two cars, a few puny signs. No one left or entered while I sat there a few minutes to watch. Now, Trump purportedly has his own office in Reading which might have more activity. But that just goes to show that the Republican Party is just about Trump. The contrast between the two offices was dramatically different. I think it bodes well for our team! Go Kamala!
Has anyone ever bought a no-kink hose?
I am so tired of my hoses getting a snag and I have to walk back and un-kink it. We are so dry here in SE PA. I have been watering just to keep my plants alive. I have trees I need to plant but we havent had measurable rain in 4 weeks, with nothing forecast in the next 10 days. Fall is tree planting but its just not good right now 😟😑.
Anyway, a brand or type of hose suggestion is much appreciated!
Shapiro
Love Shapiro, hes my governor. Its true he might (might!) cost Harris some pro-Palestinian votes. But why would a pro-Palestinian or Muslim voter allow another TSF presidency? He supposedly wants to bomb Gaza and his SIL is eager to begin building there. He doesnt appear to like the Muslim population here or anywhere. I think that being pro-Palestine does not automatically mean being anti-Semitic just as being pro-Israel doesnt mean you dont support a two state solution.
That being said, I do like Kelly, too, for VP. Hes got an awful lot going for him - southern border state Senator, military, astronaut, etc. Walz is unfamiliar to me but the more I see, the more I like him, too. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful choices!
Stomp on them and stomp on them until they are dead
In the early 2000's, after 9/11, I was looking to buy a horse. I wanted a special breed that was relatively rare in the US at that time, a Friesian. My daughter, who excels at research, found one online located at a farm in Virginia. We made contact an arranged a visit. It turned out that the husband was a Republican political who had been the Director of OSHA during the Reagan Administration - which gave us pause. (In our family, we have a saying - Republicans are either stupid or evil, or both). But the wife was perfectly lovely and invited us to visit for the weekend, see the horse and attend a horse show on that Sunday before heading back home. So we went!
The farm was beautiful, located in Virginia horse hunt country and close to James Carville's place. The couple were liquidating their horse herd, selling the farm, and starting a (dubious in my mind) radio venture in Central America - or at least, that is the story we were told. The wife was gracious and hospitable; the husband was, in fact, evil. I got inklings of this at the barbecue dinner arranged for that Saturday evening, due to various comments denigrating us as "liberals" and questions he asked about the upcoming gubernatorial race in Pennsylvania. We assured him that Ed Rendell would win.
It was on the second day that he revealed himself. After a spirited discussion about a woman's right to choose he said that his job as a Republican was to - and I quote - "Stomp on the Democrats, and stomp on them and stomp on them until they are dead!" I was appalled and we left the horse show shortly after that to head home.
This attitude of scorched earth and decimation politics has been around for a long time, beginning with the 70's Nixon cheating, picking up speed with 80's Reagan racism, magnified by the 90's Newt Gingrich partisan poison, continued with the smoother but no less destructive 2000's Bush slow motion government ruination and finally the 2010's rise of authoritarian Drumpf fascism. They do not deserve our compassion or outreach, but do require respect and understanding as terrible opponents. Know thine enemies!
The mare we looked at that weekend was pleasant but unremarkable; we did not buy from the Republican jerk. We bought a wonderful Friesian gelding that my daughter found - again online - in Canada and he was my beauty boy until his passing last year at the age of 23.
Me Too
I live and work in the part of Pennsylvania that is more like Alabama - red, red, red.
My Biden sign was the only one on my road. My veterans for Biden sign was stolen the night before the election. My other Biden sign was cut into pieces, although oddly, it was repaired and replaced. I work with people who are nearly all drumpf fans. I am continuously shocked by their inhumanity, their callous attitude towards others, and their gross admiration for a man who is so disgusting, so venal, so base, so corrupt, and so criminal. I am having a very hard time processing the closeness of this election. And an even harder time working face to face with those who gleefully with this representative of all that is terrible about human nature.
